What You Need for a REAL ID in PA: Documents, Fees, and Where to Apply

To get a REAL ID in PA, you need four things: one document proving your identity and lawful presence in the United States, one showing your Social Security number, two showing your current Pennsylvania address, and, if your name has changed, paperwork linking every version of your name back to your identity document. You bring the originals to a PennDOT Driver License Center, or submit them online if you qualify for pre-verification. The REAL ID itself costs $30 on top of your standard license or ID renewal fee.

Proof of Identity and Lawful Status

Bring one of the following:1Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. REAL ID Document Requirements

  • A U.S. birth certificate with a raised or embossed seal, issued by a government office of vital statistics. Hospital souvenir certificates don’t count.
  • A valid, unexpired U.S. passport or passport card.
  • A Certificate of Citizenship or Naturalization from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

Every document you submit must be an original or a certified copy from the issuing agency. PennDOT will not accept photocopies, notarized copies, or printouts.1Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. REAL ID Document Requirements If your birth certificate is damaged, faded, or has a broken seal, order a replacement from the vital records office in your state of birth before your appointment. Replacement fees generally run between $15 and $53.

Social Security Number

You need one document showing your full nine-digit Social Security number. PennDOT accepts any of these:2Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Apply for REAL ID

  • Social Security card
  • W-2 form
  • SSA-1099 form
  • Non-SSA-1099 form
  • Pay stub showing the full number

The name on this document has to match the name on your identity document. If you’ve changed your name since your Social Security card was issued, either update the card through the Social Security Administration first or bring a document that already shows your current legal name, like a recent W-2.

Two Proofs of Pennsylvania Address

Both documents must be physical, not phone screens, and both must show your current address.1Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. REAL ID Document Requirements Any two of these work:

  • Current PA driver’s license or photo ID
  • PA vehicle registration card
  • Auto insurance card
  • Utility bill with your name and address
  • W-2 form or pay stub
  • Tax records
  • Lease agreement or mortgage document
  • Any mail that has moved through the U.S. Postal Service

The name and address on both documents must match the information on your application exactly. A utility bill with a former spouse’s name, a nickname, or an outdated address will be rejected. Pull your documents out ahead of time and check them side by side.

Live with family or roommates and have no bills in your name? That last bullet is the way through. Any piece of mail processed by the U.S. Postal Service and addressed to you at your current address qualifies: a bank statement, an insurance notice, a government letter.

Name Change Paperwork

If the name you use now doesn’t match the name on your birth certificate or identity document, you need an unbroken paper trail connecting each change. PennDOT accepts:3Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Changing Your Name on a REAL ID

  • Certified marriage certificate issued by the county court
  • Court order granting a legal name change
  • Adoption records
  • Amended, certified birth certificate with a raised or embossed seal from a government office

Every link has to be documented. Married, took a spouse’s name, divorced, kept it? Bring the marriage certificate. Then changed your name by court order? Bring that too. The chain has to run from the name on your birth certificate to the name you use today.

Lost records come from the county clerk’s office that handled the original proceeding. Certified replacement marriage certificates generally cost $15 to $35 and can take a few weeks, so request them early.

Fees and Payment

The REAL ID adds a one-time $30 fee to your standard renewal fee. For a non-commercial driver’s license, renewal is $39.50, so the total is $69.50.4Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. One Note Before You Go

If you already carry a valid U.S. passport or passport card, you don’t need a REAL ID to board a domestic flight or enter a federal building.8Transportation Security Administration. Acceptable Identification at the TSA Checkpoint Children under 18 traveling with an adult aren’t required to show ID at TSA checkpoints at all, so they don’t need one either. For everyone else, since May 7, 2025, a standard Pennsylvania license no longer gets you through airport security or into federal facilities, which is why the REAL ID exists.
