A South Carolina driver’s license carries your identity and driving privileges on a single plastic card, and what’s on a South Carolina driver’s license splits cleanly between the two sides: the front holds your photo, personal details, and license class, while the back holds a scannable barcode along with any restriction or endorsement codes that apply to you. Woven through both sides are more than 40 security features, and a gold star in the upper portion tells you whether the card is REAL ID-compliant.1South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles. What’s Printed on the Front
The front of the card shows your full legal name, residential address, and date of birth. A unique license number identifies you for law enforcement lookups and insurance records.2South Carolina Legislature. South Carolina Code 56-1-140 – Issuance of License Your license class is printed there as well, telling an officer at a glance which vehicles you’re authorized to drive.
Physical descriptors round out the printed data: height, eye color, and sex. A color portrait photo sits prominently on the card, and next to it is a smaller translucent “ghost image” of the same photo. The ghost image is both an identification aid and a tamper check, because any attempt to swap the main photo leaves obvious damage next to the duplicate.
In the upper portion of the card, you’ll see one of two things. A gold star means the card is REAL ID-compliant. If the card instead reads “Not for Federal Identification,” it’s a standard South Carolina license.3South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles. 100 Days to the Deadline for Real ID
License Class Letters
The class letter printed on the front tells you what you’re allowed to drive. Most personal licenses fall into classes D, E, F, G, or M, with M covering motorcycles. Commercial vehicles require a separate CDL in class A, B, or C.
What’s Printed on the Back
The reverse side carries a PDF417 two-dimensional barcode. It stores the same personal information printed on the front, and officers scan it with handheld readers to pull your data directly into their systems during a stop or an accident report.4South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles. Barcode Interpretation Information Retailers also read the barcode for electronic age verification at the point of sale.
Restriction and endorsement codes are printed on the back. The most common is code “A,” which means you must wear corrective lenses while driving. If the SCDMV’s vision screening determined that your eyesight meets the 20/40 standard only with glasses or contacts, the restriction gets added to your card and encoded in the barcode. Driving without your corrective lenses when code “A” appears on your license is a citable violation.5South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles. Vision Tests
Voluntary Designations
Two voluntary markings can appear on the card. You can indicate organ donor status, and veterans who served honorably can add a “Veteran” designation at no charge.6South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles. Security Features Woven Through the Card
The current license design incorporates more than 40 advanced security features.1South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles. SCDMV Unveils New Driver’s License and ID Card Designs Featuring Iconic South Carolina Imagery Laser engraving replaced older printing methods, producing a card that’s more durable and significantly harder to counterfeit. The card stock itself is stronger than earlier versions and won’t peel apart the way older laminated cards sometimes did.
The background imagery weaves in South Carolina state symbols: the Statehouse, the Palmetto Tree and Crescent from the state flag, the Yellow Jessamine, the Carolina Wren, and the Loggerhead Sea Turtle. These designs are set in fine-line patterns that make reproduction extremely difficult. The ghost image overlaps the complex artwork, so tampering with the photo also damages the background.
What the Gold Star Means
The gold star on a REAL ID version isn’t decoration. Since May 7, 2025, the TSA has required a REAL ID-compliant license or another federally accepted identification to board domestic commercial flights and enter secure federal buildings and military installations. Travelers without acceptable ID face a $45 fee at the airport.7TSA. REAL ID
A standard South Carolina license labeled “Not for Federal Identification” still works for driving, age verification, and state-level identification, but it cannot be used for any of those federal purposes.8South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles. The REAL ID version simply required two proofs of your current physical South Carolina address at application rather than one.9South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles. Checking Your Card for Accuracy
When a new or renewed license arrives in the mail, read every field on both sides. Confirm the spelling of your name, your address, your date of birth, and your license class on the front. Check the restriction codes on the back, especially code “A” if you wear corrective lenses, and confirm that any veteran or organ donor designation you requested is present. Catching an error early matters, because correcting one later means a trip to a branch.
