When Are Iowa Taxes Due? Filing Dates, Extensions, Penalties

Iowa individual income tax returns and any balance owed are due April 30, two weeks after the federal deadline. That April 30 date is the main answer to the question of when Iowa taxes are due, but the state runs separate calendars for estimated payments, business returns, employer withholding, sales tax, and property tax, and each one carries its own penalties for missing the window.

Individual Income Tax: April 30

Your Iowa individual return for the prior calendar year, along with any tax owed, must be submitted by April 30. If April 30 falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or state holiday, the deadline moves to the next business day.1Department of Revenue. Individual Income

If you can’t pay the full amount, file anyway and pay what you can. Filing on time limits the penalties that would otherwise stack on top of each other.

Quarterly Estimated Payment Dates

You need to make quarterly estimated payments if you expect to owe $200 or more in Iowa income tax on income that isn’t subject to withholding, which commonly includes self-employment earnings, rental income, and investment gains.2Cornell Law School / Legal Information Institute. Iowa Code r 701-308.1 – Who Must Pay Estimated Income Tax For calendar-year filers, the four installment dates are April 30, June 30, September 30, and January 31 of the following year.

Payments go in on Form IA 1040ES or through GovConnectIowa. Whatever you paid in installments is credited on your annual return, and any overpayment can be refunded or rolled into next year’s estimates.3Department of Revenue. Line 29 – Estimated and Other Payments

Business Returns

Iowa corporate income tax returns are also due April 30 for calendar-year filers. Fiscal-year corporations have until the last day of the fourth month after their tax year ends.4Iowa Department of Revenue. Corporate estimated payments are due April 30, June 30, September 30, and December 31. The fourth installment falls in December, not January, so corporate filers can’t use the individual schedule as a shortcut.

Fiduciary returns for estates and trusts (Form IA 1041) are due within four calendar months after the end of the tax year, meaning April 30 for calendar-year filers.5Iowa Department of Revenue. 2025 IA 1041 Instructions

Employer Withholding

If you withhold Iowa tax from employee wages, your deposit schedule depends on how much tax you collect in a year.6Department of Revenue. Filing Frequency and Return Due Dates

  • Quarterly (less than $6,000 per year): return and payment by the last day of the month following each quarter.
  • Monthly ($6,000 to $120,000 per year): payments for the first two months of each quarter by the 15th of the following month; the quarterly return with the third month’s balance by the last day of the month after the quarter.
  • Semimonthly (over $120,000 per year): the 1st–15th payment by the 25th of that month; the 16th–end-of-month payment by the 10th of the following month; a quarterly return by the last day of the month after the quarter.

Semimonthly filers must remit payments and file returns electronically.

Sales and Use Tax

Since July 2022, Iowa has only two sales tax filing frequencies, monthly and annual, after eliminating the semimonthly and quarterly options.7Department of Revenue. Iowa Code r 701-202.1 – Sales and Use Tax Return Filing Businesses at or above that threshold file monthly, with each return due the last day of the month following the reporting month.

Property Tax

Property taxes are paid to the county treasurer in two installments covering the fiscal year that began the previous July 1.10Iowa.gov. How Do I Pay Property Taxes? The first installment is due September 1 and payable without penalty through September 30. The second is due March 1 and payable without penalty through March 31.

Miss either grace window and delinquent taxes accrue interest at 1.5% per month. A property that stays delinquent can eventually be offered at the county’s annual tax sale, so paying even a day into October or April starts the clock.

The Automatic Six-Month Extension

Iowa grants an automatic six-month extension to file, pushing the individual return deadline from April 30 to October 31. You don’t need to submit an extension form, and a federal extension does not apply to Iowa.11Department of Revenue. Note – Additional Information – Section: Extension Requests

The condition: you must have paid at least 90% of your total tax liability by April 30. Hit the 90% mark and the extra six months come with no late-filing penalty. Fall short and the late-filing penalty applies.

Interest still accrues on any unpaid balance from April 30 forward, even during an approved extension.4Iowa Department of Revenue. Important Upcoming IDR Tax Deadlines – Income and Franchise Tax Return You can make a payment to reach the 90% threshold through GovConnectIowa or by mailing a check with Form IA 1040V.

The same rule applies to corporate, partnership, S-corporation, and fiduciary filers: pay 90% of the correct tax by the original due date and you get six months to file without a late-filing penalty.12Cornell Law School / Legal Information Institute. What Happens If You Miss a Deadline

Iowa charges separate penalties for filing late and for paying late, and both can hit the same return. Filing after the deadline without qualifying for the automatic extension costs 5% of the unpaid tax.13Justia Law. Iowa Code Title X Chapter 421 Section 421-27 – Penalties Paying late adds another 5% on the unpaid balance. A taxpayer who neither files nor pays on time faces a combined 10% penalty before interest.

Interest on unpaid Iowa tax runs at 10% annually for 2026, calculated from the original due date until the balance clears.14Department of Revenue. IDR Announces 2026 Individual Income Tax and Interest Rates The rate resets each year based on the average prime rate plus two points, and it keeps accruing during any approved extension.

Two carve-outs are worth knowing. File your return after April 30 but before October 31 with at least 90% of the tax already paid by April 30, and the 5% late-filing penalty is waived entirely. File the return on time but pay less than 90%, and the penalty applies only to the unpaid portion.11Department of Revenue. Note – Additional Information – Section: Extension Requests Willful failure to file with intent to evade tax is treated separately, carrying a penalty of 75% of the unpaid tax.13Justia Law.
