When Can You Buy Beer in Oklahoma? Hours, Sunday, and Holidays

You can buy beer in Oklahoma at a grocery store or convenience store any day of the week between 6:00 a.m. and 2:00 a.m. the following morning, including Sundays and holidays. Liquor stores keep tighter hours, bars run on a third schedule, and Sunday liquor store sales depend on where you live.

Grocery and Convenience Store Hours

Any store with a Retail Beer License from the Oklahoma Alcoholic Beverage Laws Enforcement (ABLE) Commission can sell beer from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m. the next day, seven days a week.1Justia Law. Oklahoma Code 37A-6-108 – Prohibited Acts of Holders of Retail Wine or Retail Beer Licenses Supermarkets, gas stations, and convenience stores all fall under this license.

There are no statewide holiday blackout days for these retailers. Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Day, election days — if the store is open and you’re inside the 6 a.m. to 2 a.m. window, you can buy beer.1Justia Law. Oklahoma Code 37A-6-108 – Prohibited Acts of Holders of Retail Wine or Retail Beer Licenses Full-strength beer and wine have been legal at these stores since October 2018, so the old 3.2 percent cap no longer applies.

Liquor Store Hours

Liquor stores (retail spirits licensees in Oklahoma statute) operate on a shorter clock. They can sell beer and other alcoholic beverages from 8:00 a.m. to midnight, Monday through Saturday.2Oklahoma Senate. Oklahoma Statutes Title 37A Alcoholic Beverages

Watch the midnight cutoff. There’s a two-hour gap between when liquor stores must close and when grocery and convenience stores have to stop selling beer at 2:00 a.m. People get caught by this all the time: walk into a liquor store at 12:15 a.m. and you’re too late, but the gas station across the street can still sell you a six-pack.

Liquor stores also must close on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day, no matter what day of the week they fall on.2Oklahoma Senate. Oklahoma Statutes Title 37A Alcoholic Beverages No other holiday triggers a mandatory shutdown.

Can You Buy Beer on Sunday?

At a grocery store or convenience store, yes, anywhere in the state, 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m. like any other day.

At a liquor store, it depends on your county. Sunday liquor store sales are not automatic in Oklahoma. The county has to hold a voter election and approve them. Senate Bill 211, passed in 2017, gave county commissioners authority to put the question on the ballot.3Oklahoma Senate. Senate Approves County Option for Sunday Liquor Store Sales In March 2020, seven counties, including Oklahoma and Tulsa counties, voted yes. Where approved, liquor stores may open Sundays from noon to midnight.2Oklahoma Senate. Oklahoma Statutes Title 37A Alcoholic Beverages

If your county has not voted or the measure failed, liquor stores stay closed on Sundays. The grocery store or gas station is your only option.

Holiday Hours

Only two days trigger a statewide closure, and only for liquor stores: Thanksgiving and Christmas. Grocery and convenience stores can sell beer on those days during their normal 6 a.m. to 2 a.m. window. Election days are explicitly not blocked at any license type under state law.1Justia Law. Oklahoma Code 37A-6-108 – Prohibited Acts of Holders of Retail Wine or Retail Beer Licenses

Bars and Restaurants

Establishments with an on-premises license — bars, restaurants, brewpubs — can serve beer from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m. the following morning.2Oklahoma Senate. Oklahoma Statutes Title 37A Alcoholic Beverages Service must stop at 2:00 a.m., and no alcohol can be consumed on the premises after that. Municipalities can require establishments to lock the doors between 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m., though the state doesn’t require it.

On-premises sales also depend on a county vote. Most populated counties approved individual-drink sales years ago, but a handful of rural counties still don’t allow bars to sell alcohol by the drink. The ballot in a given county may also designate specific days when on-premises sales are off limits, so hours can vary locally.

Tribal Land

Oklahoma has extensive tribal lands, and alcohol rules there run on a separate framework. Under federal law, state alcohol rules apply on tribal land only when the sale also conforms to an ordinance adopted by the tribe with jurisdiction over that area.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 18 U.S. Code 1161 – Application of Indian Liquor Laws Each tribe sets its own policy, and some tribal jurisdictions are dry. If you’re buying on or near tribal land, check the local rule.

Age to Buy

You have to be at least 21 to buy any alcoholic beverage in Oklahoma, including beer.5Justia Law. Oklahoma Code 37A-6-101 – Prohibited Acts – Violations – Penalties Retailers have to verify age, and if you look under 30, expect to be asked for ID.
