In Ohio, your license plates expire at the end of your birthday month each year. If you were born in October, your registration is good through October 31; if your birthday is in March, you have until March 31. The rule applies to most passenger vehicles, and the Ohio BMV staggers renewals this way so they don’t all pile up at year-end.1Ohio BMV. Renew Your Vehicle Registration
You can renew up to 90 days before that date, and the BMV sends a reminder by mail or email at least 45 days out.1Ohio BMV. Renew Your Vehicle Registration
How to Confirm Your Exact Expiration Date
Look at the validation sticker on your rear license plate. It shows both the month and the year your current registration runs through.2Ohio Legislative Service Commission. Ohio Revised Code 4503.21 – Display of License Plates and Validation Stickers or Temporary License Registration

Leased and Commercial Vehicles Follow Different Rules
The birth-month rule covers most passenger drivers, but two categories are set differently.
For a leased vehicle, the registration expires on the 20th day of a month assigned based on the leasing company’s name, not your birthday. For a commercial vehicle, the validation sticker expires on the last day of a month assigned from the last two digits of the titled owner’s federal tax ID or Social Security number. If either applies to you, don’t assume your birth month is the deadline — check your sticker.
The Renewal Window
You can start the renewal process 90 days before expiration. The BMV mails or emails a reminder at least 45 days ahead, but a missing notice doesn’t buy you extra time. Your expiration date is your expiration date.1Ohio BMV. Renew Your Vehicle Registration
Ohio does not offer a grace period for driving. The moment the date on your sticker passes, your plates are invalid on the road. The BMV does give a 30-day administrative window before it tacks a late fee onto a renewal, but that’s a paperwork courtesy, not legal permission to keep driving. Any traffic stop during that window can still produce a citation.
What Late or Expired Plates Cost
If you renew more than 30 days past your expiration date, the BMV adds a $10 late fee to the standard renewal cost.5Ohio BMV. Documents and Fees That’s the cheap outcome.
Driving on expired plates is a traffic offense under Ohio Revised Code Section 4549.08. A stop means a citation, and if you let the registration issue sit, the BMV can treat it as non-compliance and move toward a license suspension. Reinstatement after a non-compliance suspension costs $40 for a first offense, $300 for a second offense within one year, and $600 for a third within that same year.5Ohio BMV. Documents and Fees
Some jurisdictions will also tow and impound a vehicle found on public roads without valid plates or a current sticker. Impound storage charges accrue daily on top of the towing bill. A late renewal costs ten dollars; letting the problem run can cost hundreds.
Skipping Annual Renewals With Multi-Year Registration
If the yearly cycle is a hassle, Ohio allows multi-year registration of two to five years on passenger cars, non-commercial trucks and trailers, motorcycles, mopeds, and motor homes. Commercial trailers can be registered for up to seven years. You pay all fees upfront for the full term, and there are no refunds if you sell or total the vehicle before the period ends.6Ohio BMV. Multi-year or Staggered Registration
There is no multi-year discount. You’re paying the same annual fees stacked together, so the trade is convenience rather than savings. Multi-year is available for standard system-assigned plates, initial reserve plates, and personalized plates.6Ohio BMV. Multi-year or Staggered Registration
Whether you renew yearly or in a longer block, the expiration month on your sticker is the date that matters. Check it, mark it, and renew before it passes.
