When Do Michigan Fishing Licenses Expire: March 31 or 24 Hours

Michigan fishing licenses expire on different schedules depending on type. Every annual license — resident, nonresident, senior, or youth — expires on March 31 of the year after the season it covers, no matter when you bought it. A daily license expires 24 hours after the start date and time you choose at checkout.1Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Fishing and Hunting License Information

Annual Licenses End on March 31

An annual Michigan fishing license becomes valid on March 1 and expires on March 31 of the following year. That gives the license a maximum 13-month window, and it’s the same window whether you bought the license on opening day or in mid-February.1Michigan Department of Natural Resources. The purchase date doesn’t push the expiration forward. Buy a 2026 annual license in January 2027 and it still expires March 31, 2027, leaving you roughly two months of use. The 2026 licenses went on sale in early March 2026 and stay valid through March 31, 2027.2Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Daily Licenses Run 24 Hours From the Start Time

A daily license covers a consecutive 24-hour period beginning at the date and time you select at checkout, not at midnight.1Michigan Department of Natural Resources. If you need more than one day on the water, you can stack multiple consecutive 24-hour periods in a single purchase.3Michigan Legislature. MCL 324-43533

How to Check Your Expiration Date

Your expiration date is printed on the physical license document and shown on the digital copy in the Michigan DNR Hunt Fish app.4Michigan Department of Natural Resources. New Michigan DNR Hunt Fish App If you bought online, the PDF confirmation shows it too. The app will pull up your license without an internet connection, so you can confirm your status streamside.

Not sure whether your license is still active? Log in to the state’s online licensing system at Michigan.gov/DNRLicenses. Your account lists every license you’ve bought and its current status.

What Happens If You Fish on an Expired License

Fishing with an expired license is a misdemeanor, the same as fishing with no license at all. The general penalty is a fine of up to $500, up to 90 days in jail, or both, plus prosecution costs.5Michigan Legislature. MCL 324-48738 A first offense for a lapsed license rarely draws jail, but the fine alone runs well above the cost of the license. A conservation officer can also revoke your fishing privileges for the rest of the season.

You have to carry the license — paper or digital — and show it on request to a conservation officer or law enforcement.6Michigan Legislature. MCL 324-43516 Leaving it in the truck while you wade upstream puts you out of compliance even if the license itself is current.

Buying the Next Season Before Yours Lapses

Michigan doesn’t run a separate renewal process. When March 31 arrives, you buy a new license for the coming season. Three ways to do it:

  • Online at Michigan.gov/DNRLicenses or through the DNR Hunt Fish app. The digital license is valid immediately.
  • In person at an authorized retailer — bait shops, sporting goods stores, and some general retailers across the state.
  • Auto-renew, which you can turn on at checkout or in the Hunt Fish app. The DNR will purchase your next license automatically when it becomes available each year.2Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Ready for Spring Fishing – 2026 Michigan Fishing Licenses Now Available

You’ll need a Michigan driver’s license, state ID, or DNR Sportcard to complete the purchase. Auto-renew is the simplest way to avoid getting caught on the water in early April with a license that quietly expired a few days earlier.
