A Nevada driver’s license expires on your birthday. If you’re under 65, it’s good for eight years from issuance; once you’re 65 or older, each new or renewed license lasts four years instead.1Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. Driver License and ID Fees and Exemptions So the question “when does a Nevada driver’s license expire” has two parts: the year is set by your age at the last renewal, and the day is always your birthday.
The shorter cycle for drivers 65 and up exists so vision screening happens more often. The eight-year cycle also replaced an older four-year cycle, so if it’s been a while since you last renewed, your next license may last longer than you expect.
How to Find Your Exact Expiration Date
The date is printed on the front of your license card, and it always falls on your birthday. If you can’t put hands on the card, log in to the MyDMV online portal to see your current status, expiration date, and whether you’re eligible to renew.2Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. MyDMV The DMV also mails a renewal notice roughly 90 days before expiration, or sends an email instead if you’ve signed up for the eNotice program.3Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. eNotice Initiative

What Happens the Day After Your Birthday
Nevada does not offer a grace period. Once your birthday passes, the license is expired, and driving on it is illegal. Operating a vehicle without a valid license is a misdemeanor under NRS 483.550,6Nevada Legislature. Nevada Code 483.550 – Driving Without Valid Driver’s License; Penalty and NRS 483.230 broadly requires every driver on Nevada highways to hold a valid license for the vehicle being driven.7Nevada Legislature. Nevada Code 483.230 – Licensing of Drivers Required; Vehicle Being Towed; Possession of More Than One License Prohibited A court handling the case can order you to obtain a valid license as a condition of resolution.
Your car insurance doesn’t automatically cancel when your license expires, but a claim arising while you were driving illegally may be denied, since many policies exclude losses tied to illegal activity. Even where coverage isn’t denied outright, the insurer may dispute the settlement, and a citation for driving on an expired license counts as a moving violation that can raise premiums at renewal. Paying the policy premium is not the same thing as being covered when something goes wrong.

Commercial Licenses and Instruction Permits Expire Differently
A Nevada commercial driver’s license follows the same age-based clock as a standard license: eight years from issuance under 65, four years at 65 and older, per NAC 483.832.9Legal Information Institute. Nevada Code NAC 483.832 – Expiration and Renewal of License CDL holders also have to keep a current medical certification; if it lapses, the DMV can downgrade the CDL to a standard license even though the CDL itself hasn’t expired.
A standard instruction permit for a car is valid for one year and can be renewed under NRS 483.280.10Nevada Legislature. Nevada Code 483.280 – Instruction, Restricted Instruction and Temporary Drivers’ Permits Motorcycle permits work differently by age: for drivers under 18, the permit lasts one year, is renewable, and expires automatically at age 18; for drivers 18 and older, it lasts six months, can be renewed once, and you can apply only once every five years. If any instruction permit expires before you renew it or qualify for a full license, you’ll need to retake the written exam to get a new one.
