When Does a Permit Expire in Texas? Licenses, Registrations, and Commissions

Permits in Texas expire on schedules set individually by each issuing agency, so when a permit expires depends entirely on what it is: a standard driver’s license runs eight years, a License to Carry runs four, a notary commission runs four, vehicle registration runs one, a hunting or fishing license ends every August 31, a building permit lapses after 180 days of inactivity, and a marriage license dies on the 90th day if no ceremony takes place.

Driver’s Licenses

For most adult U.S. citizens and permanent residents, a Texas driver’s license expires on the first birthday after the eighth anniversary of the application date. Each renewal resets that eight-year cycle from the previous expiration date, so the card always expires on your birthday.1Texas Public Law. Texas Transportation Code Section 521.271 – License Expiration

Drivers 85 or older are on a two-year cycle for both original and renewed licenses.2State of Texas. Texas Transportation Code 521.2711 – License Expiration Person at Least 85 Years of Age Provisional licenses and learner permits expire on the holder’s 18th birthday, after which the driver applies for a standard adult license. Noncitizens on temporary status may receive shorter validity tied to their authorized stay.1Texas Public Law. Texas Transportation Code Section 521.271 – License Expiration

Commercial driver’s licenses share the eight-year base period but can only be renewed within one year of expiration, not two. CDL holders also need a current DOT medical examiner’s certificate on file with DPS, typically renewed every two years.3Texas Department of Public Safety. REAL ID status does not affect when your license expires. The eight-year cycle is the same whether your card has the gold star or not. Since May 7, 2025, a non-compliant license will still get you through TSA, but only after paying a $45 ConfirmID fee with no guarantee of verification.4Transportation Security Administration. License to Carry a Handgun

An original Texas License to Carry expires on the first birthday after the fourth anniversary of issuance. A renewed LTC lasts an extra year, expiring on your birthday five years after the previous license expired.5State of Texas. Texas Government Code 411.183 – Expiration

Because Texas now allows most adults to carry a handgun without a license, letting an LTC lapse is not itself a crime. What you lose is reciprocity. Other states that honor a Texas LTC will not recognize your permitless-carry rights at home, so an expired LTC matters most when you travel armed across state lines.

Hunting and Fishing Licenses

Standard Texas hunting and fishing licenses are valid from the date of purchase through August 31 of that license year. A license bought in September gives you nearly a full year; one bought in July gives you less than two months for the same price.6Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Hunting Licenses

Most fishing packages follow the same August 31 cutoff, but Texas Parks and Wildlife offers residents a “Year from Purchase” all-water package that stays valid through the end of the same month in the following license year, giving a full 12 months regardless of when you buy. One-day licenses expire at the end of the selected day. Lifetime hunting and fishing licenses, available only to Texas residents, never expire.7Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Vehicle Registration

Vehicle registration is renewed annually, and the expiration month printed on your sticker stays the same for as long as you own the vehicle. After it lapses, you have five working days to drive without penalty. Past that, a citation can run up to $200.8Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. Register Your Vehicle

Marriage Licenses

A Texas marriage license expires if the ceremony does not take place before the 90th day after issuance. There is no extension and no renewal; a lapsed license means applying and paying again from scratch.9State of Texas. Texas Family Code FAM 2.201

Building Permits

Building permits are issued locally, so the exact rules depend on your city or county. A common pattern across Texas municipalities is the 180-day rule: a permit expires if work does not begin within 180 days of issuance, or if work stops for 180 consecutive days once started.10City of Midland. Building Permits

An expired building permit can trigger a stop-work order that halts construction on the spot. Resuming usually means a new permit application, new fees, and compliance with any code changes that took effect in the meantime. If a project is likely to stall, call the local permitting office about an extension before the 180 days run out.

Notary Public Commissions

A Texas notary public commission is valid for four years from the date of issuance. The commission belongs to the individual notary regardless of who paid the application fees, so it travels with you if you change employers.11Texas Secretary of State. Frequently Asked Questions for Notaries Public

What Happens If a Permit Expires

Driving on an expired license is a misdemeanor. A first offense carries a fine of up to $200. A second conviction within one year of the first brings a fine between $25 and $200. A third or later conviction within a year of the second escalates to a fine of up to $500, possible jail time of 72 hours to six months, or both.12State of Texas. Texas Transportation Code TRANSP 521.025 A judge may dismiss the charge if you renew before your court date, but that dismissal is discretionary. And if you’re in a crash with an expired license, your insurer may deny the claim or raise your rates.

Expired vehicle registration carries a fine of up to $200 once the five-day grace period ends.8Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. Register Your Vehicle Expired hunting or fishing licenses can result in citations from Texas game wardens, with fines varying by violation. An expired LTC costs you out-of-state carry rights rather than a criminal charge. An expired building permit means a stop-work order and starting the permitting process over.

How to Check an Expiration Date

The document itself is the first place to look. A Texas driver’s license prints the expiration date on the front of the card. Hunting and fishing licenses show the August 31 end date. A marriage license shows the issue date, from which you count 90 days.

If you have lost your license or want to check your driving status online, the Texas Department of Public Safety runs a Driver License Eligibility system that shows current status and any compliance requirements.13Texas.gov. Official Texas Driver License Eligibility System For building permits, vehicle registration, and other locally administered documents, contact the issuing office directly. Many Texas cities and counties offer online permit portals, but no single statewide system covers every permit type.
