California SDI starts paying on the eighth day of your disability, after a mandatory seven-day unpaid waiting period, and the EDD typically issues your first payment within 14 days of receiving a complete claim. In practice, that means most people in California see their first SDI payment about three weeks after their disability began, assuming they file promptly and their doctor sends in the medical certification without delay.1Employment Development Department. That three-week estimate is the smooth-path version. Your actual timeline depends on three things: when you file, when your doctor submits the certification, and how busy the EDD is when your claim lands.
The First Seven Days Are Unpaid
Every new SDI claim begins with a seven-day waiting period that pays nothing. The first payable day of your claim is day eight of your disability, regardless of how severe your condition is or how long you expect to be out.2Employment Development Department. Disability Insurance Benefits and Payments FAQs The waiting period is built into every standard claim and cannot be waived.3Legal Information Institute. California Code of Regulations 22 CCR 2627(b)-1 – Waiting Period
So even if the EDD processed your claim the moment your disability started, you would still not receive anything for that first week. The waiting period runs on the calendar, not on how quickly the agency moves.
When You Can File
You cannot file on day one. The EDD requires you to wait at least nine days after your disability begins before submitting a claim, and you have 49 days from the start date to get it in. Miss the 49-day deadline and you can be disqualified from receiving benefits entirely.4Employment Development Department. How to File a Disability Insurance Claim in SDI Online
Your doctor’s medical certification has to arrive within that same 49-day window. The claim has two pieces, your portion and the physician’s portion, and both have to reach the EDD before the clock on processing even starts.
Filing through SDI Online is faster than mailing a paper claim. Both parts move into the system quicker, and you can check your status as it progresses.5Employment Development Department. State Disability Insurance
What Happens Once the EDD Has Everything
Once your claim is complete, meaning both your portion and your doctor’s certification have arrived, the EDD takes up to 14 days to determine eligibility and issue your first payment.1Employment Development Department. Disability Insurance Claim Process
Here is how the typical schedule stacks up:
- Days 1 through 7: unpaid waiting period, running from the day your disability starts.
- Day 9 or later: the earliest you can file your claim.
- Up to 14 days after the EDD has your complete claim: eligibility determination and first payment.
A claimant who files on day nine, with a doctor who turns the certification around quickly, might see a first payment around three weeks after the disability began. If the doctor’s office takes a week or two, or if the EDD flags something on your application, add that time on top. The EDD also sends a Notice of Computation (Form DE 429D) showing your weekly benefit amount and the maximum total you can collect, based on your base period wages.6Employment Development Department. How Your First Payment Actually Reaches You
The EDD offers three payment methods, and the method changes how fast money is in your hands once your claim is approved.7Employment Development Department. Your Benefit Payment Options
- Prepaid debit card. This is the default. The EDD issues a Money Network prepaid debit card you can use for purchases and ATM withdrawals. First payments arrive on the card within 7 to 10 days of approval. After that, future payments post within two days of approval. You can also set up automatic transfers from the card to your personal bank account.
- Direct deposit. Payments go straight to the bank account you enter through SDI Online.
- Mailed check. A paper check sent to your address on file, the slowest option.
You can change your payment method at any time by logging into your myEDD account, opening SDI Online, and editing the payment option in your profile.8Employment Development Department. Step 5 – Receive Your First Payment
So “when does SDI pay” has two layers: when the EDD approves and releases the payment, and how long your chosen delivery method takes after that. A debit card holder waiting on a first payment should expect roughly a week to ten days between approval and funds being usable.
Why Payments Get Delayed
The 14-day processing estimate assumes the claim is clean and the EDD is not swamped. Several things routinely push the timeline out:
- Incomplete applications. Blank fields or inconsistent information force the EDD to follow up before processing can continue.
- Late or missing medical certification. Your doctor’s portion has to arrive within 49 days of your disability start date. A slow medical office keeps your claim sitting as incomplete, and no processing clock runs until both parts are in.4Employment Development Department. How to File a Disability Insurance Claim in SDI Online
- Identity verification. The EDD sometimes asks for additional documentation to confirm your identity, which adds days or weeks.
- High claim volume. During flu season surges or other heavy-filing periods, processing times for everyone stretch past the standard two weeks.
The single most effective thing you can do to avoid delays is file through SDI Online and then call your doctor’s office directly to confirm the certification has been submitted. Do not assume it is done because you asked once.
Keeping Payments Coming After the First One
Getting the first payment is only half the question. The EDD uses one of two systems to keep you paid, and each has its own paperwork rhythm:
- Automatic payments. After 10 weeks of payment, the EDD sends a Disability Claim Continuing Eligibility Certification (Form DE 2593). You have to complete and return it to confirm your disability is ongoing. If you do not return it, payments stop.
- Non-automatic payments. The EDD sends a Claim for Continued Disability Benefits (Form DE 2500A) every two weeks. Each one has to come back for payments to continue.
You have 20 days to return either form, and both can be submitted through SDI Online, which is the fastest route. A missed form stops your money until the paperwork catches up. If your disability is expected to last longer than your initial claim covered, your doctor will need to submit a supplementary medical certificate so the EDD can decide whether to extend benefits.9Employment Development Department. Continue or Stop Your Benefits
One boundary worth knowing: SDI is a wage-replacement program only. It does not protect your job. Job protection comes from separate laws like FMLA and CFRA, which run on their own timelines and have their own eligibility rules.10Employment Development Department.
