There is no single date for the next civil service exam in NJ. The Civil Service Commission posts exam announcements title by title throughout the year as vacancies open and existing eligible lists expire, so when the next test runs depends entirely on which job you want. The entry-level law enforcement exam is given every year, the entry-level firefighter exam every two years, and most other titles are announced only when an agency needs to hire. To catch the next one that fits you, check the Commission’s Job Announcements page1Civil Service Commission. Job Announcements and sign up for email alerts in your job category.
Why There’s No Single Exam Date
New Jersey runs two tracks of exams. Open Competitive exams are open to anyone who meets the qualifications. Promotional exams are limited to current government employees moving up. For most people trying to enter public employment, Open Competitive is the door.
Public safety titles are on the most predictable schedules. The entry-level law enforcement exam is administered annually, and the entry-level firefighter exam every two years.2State of New Jersey Civil Service Commission. Civil Service Commission – Announcement and Testing Schedules Promotional exams for both services also follow set schedules organized by title group.3Civil Service Commission. Administrative, clerical, and technical titles work differently. The Commission generally won’t announce a new exam for one of these until the existing eligible list is close to expiring or has run out of names. The gap between cycles for a given title can stretch three or four years. If you’re waiting for a specific job, the filing window can open and close before you notice.
Where to Find the Next Exam
The Commission’s Job Announcements page lists every current opening with its announcement number, closing date, and a link to the full announcement. Most announcements stay posted for at least two weeks.4Civil Service Commission. Job Announcements That two-week window is often all you get.
Email alerts are the second half of the system. You can subscribe and filter by job category, so the Commission notifies you when a matching title is announced. Do this even if you plan to check the website yourself, because some titles go years between announcements. Every announcement carries a firm closing date, and there is generally no way to file late once it passes.
The announcement and testing schedule page lists public safety exams separately, with links to orientation guides and preparation materials for law enforcement and firefighter candidates.2State of New Jersey Civil Service Commission. What to Have Ready Before You File
Filing windows are short. Scrambling for paperwork after an announcement drops can cost you the chance to apply.
Residency
Most open competitive exams require you to be a New Jersey resident by the announcement’s closing date. Some local positions require residency in a specific municipality or county. The Commission can waive the residency rule when not enough qualified residents are available, but that waiver is uncommon for popular titles.5Legal Information Institute. New Jersey Administrative Code 4A:4-2.3 – Open Competitive Examinations
Documents
You’ll need a valid Social Security number, current contact information, and digital copies of whatever educational credentials the announcement asks for, such as college transcripts or professional licenses. Some titles also require proof of a specific number of years of experience in a related field. Inaccurate information about your qualifications leads to disqualification, so check everything twice before uploading.
Veteran Paperwork
If you’re a veteran, start the preference paperwork now rather than after the exam. Veterans who pass an open competitive exam receive 10 bonus points on their final score. Disabled veterans receive 5 bonus points, and so do spouses of disabled or deceased veterans, surviving spouses, and parents of deceased veterans.6State of New Jersey Civil Service Commission. NJAC 4A Readoption – Veteran Preference Rules To claim the preference you must submit a DD-214 showing honorable discharge along with NJDMAVA Form 05A-1 to the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs.7New Jersey Department of Military & Veterans Affairs. How to Apply
All applications go through the Commission’s Online Application System (OAS). First-time users have to register. If you had an account in the previous version of the system within the past five years, reset your password before logging in.8Civil Service Commission. Fees
As of February 2026, the processing fee for non-public-safety titles is $35.1Civil Service Commission. Job Announcements Public safety fees are higher. The entry-level law enforcement exam carries a $70 application fee that covers all law enforcement title areas on the announcement.9Civil Service Commission. Entry Level Law Enforcement Examination (LEE) FAQ Fees are non-refundable and can be paid by credit card or electronic check. Some applicants receiving public assistance or meeting low-income criteria may qualify for a fee waiver. Check the specific announcement for eligibility details.
Testing Accommodations
If you need accommodations for a disability, submit a Special Accommodations Request form (DPF-725) to the Commission. The form requires a diagnosis and supporting documentation from a doctor or child study team. The Commission asks that you respond within two weeks of receiving the form so accommodations can be arranged in time.10Civil Service Commission. DPF-725 Special Accommodations Request An incomplete or unsigned form means the Commission cannot guarantee the request will be honored.
Confirming You Filed
Once payment clears, the system shows a final review screen. After you submit, a confirmation number appears on screen. Save it. An automated email receipt also goes to the address on your profile. That confirmation number is your proof of filing if anything is questioned later.
What Happens After You Apply
Filing starts a review that can take several months. Commission staff check each application against the minimum education and experience requirements in the announcement. You’ll receive a Notification of Eligibility telling you whether you’ve been cleared to sit for the exam. If you’re cleared, a separate Examination Notice follows with the date, time, and location of your test.
Scores are generally processed and released within a few months of the test date. Your final score, including any veteran preference points, determines your rank on the eligible list that results. Eligible lists stay active for three years from the date they’re established, though the Commission’s chairperson can extend a list for good cause up to a maximum of four years.11Legal Information Institute. New Jersey Administrative Code 4A:4-3.3 – Duration and Cancellation of Eligible Lists Agencies pull names from the list to fill vacancies during that window.
If You’re Testing for a Public Safety Job
Public safety candidates face steps beyond the written exam. For firefighter positions, the Commission administers a Physical Performance Test at the time of list certification. Whenever an agency requests candidates from the firefighter eligible list, those who respond as interested are scheduled for the physical test, and you must pass to continue through hiring.12Civil Service Commission. Firefighter Physical Performance Test Manual Because the physical test is tied to actual hiring rather than to the written exam date, you could be called at any point during the life of the list. Staying in shape across that three-to-four-year window matters. Law enforcement candidates face a background investigation, medical screening, and fitness standards set by the hiring agency.
Appealing an Eligibility or Score Decision
If you’re disqualified or disagree with your score, you can appeal to the Commission’s Division of Appeals and Regulatory Affairs. Valid grounds include eligibility decisions, scoring disputes, and problems with how the exam was administered.13Civil Service Commission. Appeals – Frequently Asked Questions
Appeals must be in writing, and there’s a $20 filing fee. If you received a notice with specific appeal rights, you must file within the timeframe listed on that notice. Otherwise, the general deadline is 20 days from when you knew or should have known about the issue.14Civil Service Commission. Appeal Filing System If the Commission rules against you and you want to challenge that decision, you have 45 days from receiving the decision to request reconsideration. Mark your calendar the moment any adverse notice arrives.
