Kane County property tax bills for 2026 are being mailed by May 1, with the first installment due June 1 and the second installment due September 1.1Kane County Treasurer. Illinois Compiled Statutes 35 ILCS 200/21-15 – General Tax Due Dates; Default by Mortgage Lender Your bill arrives with two payment coupons, one for each installment.
What Late Payment Costs You
Miss either due date and interest starts accruing the very next day at 1.5% per month on the unpaid balance.3Illinois General Assembly. Illinois Compiled Statutes 35 ILCS 200/21-15 – General Tax Due Dates; Default by Mortgage Lender That rate applies to any portion of a month, so being one day late triggers the full monthly charge. Being one day late in June and paying on June 2 costs you the same interest as paying on June 30.
Your payment has to be postmarked or submitted electronically by the due date to count as on time. A check written on June 1 but postmarked June 2 is late.
Ways to Pay
Kane County accepts property tax payments through four channels:
- Online through the Treasurer’s payment portal at payments.municipay.com. Credit and debit cards carry a 2.35% convenience fee with a $2.00 minimum; electronic check is also available.4Kane County Treasurer, IL. How to Pay Your Taxes
- By mail, using the coupon from your bill. The postmark date governs.
- In person at the Treasurer’s office, 719 S. Batavia Avenue, Building A, in Geneva.2Kane County Treasurer. Kane County Treasurer
- Through your mortgage escrow account, if you have one (see below).
If you plan to mail a payment close to the deadline, the Treasurer’s office has flagged that the U.S. Postal Service changed its postmark practices in late 2025. Dropping a check into a blue collection box the day before the deadline will not reliably produce a same-day postmark. Paying online or in person removes that risk.
If Your Bill Hasn’t Arrived
Not receiving a bill does not excuse payment and does not stop late interest from accruing. If your paper bill has not shown up by mid-May, look up your account on the Kane County Property Tax Inquiry portal. You can search by parcel number or last name and print a copy of the bill from the site.5Kane County Property Tax Inquiry. Kane County Property Tax Inquiry
Going forward, you can switch to paperless delivery. The 2026 paper bill carries a unique authorization code in the top right corner. Enter that code at enoticesonline.com, create an account, and future bills come to you electronically.2Kane County Treasurer. Kane County Treasurer
If Your Mortgage Includes an Escrow Account
If a mortgage servicer collects escrow for your taxes, you still get the bill. Illinois law directs tax bills to the property owner of record, not to the lender.6Illinois General Assembly. 35 ILCS 200 – Property Tax Code Do not throw the bill out assuming the servicer will handle it. Confirm with your servicer that they have the correct parcel number and amount, and after each due date check your account on the Treasurer’s portal to make sure the payment posted.
This matters most when your loan has been transferred mid-cycle. If the servicer misses a disbursement, the late interest is charged to you as the property owner, not to the lender.
Updating Your Mailing Address
If you’ve moved, update your address with the county so next year’s bill reaches you. Under 35 ILCS 200/20-20, the county collector has to verify that anyone requesting an address change is the property owner, a trustee, or someone with power of attorney for the owner.7Illinois General Assembly. Illinois Compiled Statutes 35 ILCS 200/20-20 In Kane County, you file a Name/Address Correction Form through the County Clerk’s office.8Kane County Clerk. The statute does allow the county collector to mail your bill to a new address if you have filed a permanent change of address with USPS, even without notifying the county directly.7Illinois General Assembly. Illinois Compiled Statutes 35 ILCS 200/20-20 USPS forwarding usually lapses after 12 months, though, so the county form is the safer fix.
What Happens If You Don’t Pay
Unpaid taxes follow a set escalation. Interest accrues at 1.5% per month from the day after the missed due date.3Illinois General Assembly. Illinois Compiled Statutes 35 ILCS 200/21-15 – General Tax Due Dates; Default by Mortgage Lender If the taxes stay unpaid, the parcel is placed on the delinquent list and offered at the county’s annual tax sale. Buyers bid for the right to pay those delinquent taxes in exchange for a lien on the property.9Illinois General Assembly. 35 ILCS 200 – Property Tax Code
After the sale, you have a redemption window to pay the delinquent taxes, interest, and fees and keep your property. For a principal residence in Kane County, the redemption period runs two and a half to three years. For other property types, the period is two years.10Kane County Government. Annual Tax Sale – Kane County Government Redemption has to be made in cash, certified funds, or a money order payable to the Kane County Clerk. If you don’t redeem in time, the tax buyer can petition for a deed and take ownership. Properties do change hands this way every year.
