In Georgia, where you claim lottery winnings depends on the size of the prize. Anything up to $600 can be cashed at any of the roughly 8,700 Georgia Lottery retailers across the state. Prizes from $601 up to $499,999 are paid at Georgia Lottery headquarters in Atlanta or at any of the nine district offices. Prizes of $500,000 and above, including jackpots, are also handled at headquarters or a district office.1Georgia Lottery. How to Claim
Claim Locations by Prize Amount
Smaller wins are the easiest. For a prize of $600 or less, walk into any Georgia Lottery retailer and they can pay you from the register. You can also use a district office, mail the ticket in, or, if you bought online, let the system credit your Players Club iHOPE account automatically.
Mid-range prizes, from $601 through $499,999, are paid at headquarters in Atlanta or at a district office. Same-day payment is generally available if you arrive before 4 p.m. For prizes between $250,000 and $499,999, that 4 p.m. cutoff is firm: show up later and you’re paid the next business day.
For $500,000 and above, headquarters and the district offices can all process the claim, jackpots included. Walk-ins are accepted when space allows, but appointments are the better bet. Call ahead.1Georgia Lottery. How to Claim
Where the District Offices Are
District offices operate in Atlanta, Augusta, Columbus, Dalton, Duluth, Macon, Savannah, Tifton, and inside the domestic terminal at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Any of them can handle any prize amount above the retailer-cashable threshold.
What to Bring to the Claim Center
For any prize over $600, you need a government-issued photo ID that shows your name and signature, plus a document showing your Social Security number. A driver’s license paired with a Social Security card is the simplest combination. You’ll fill out a Winner Claim Form with your name, address, and Social Security number, which the lottery uses for tax reporting.1Georgia Lottery. How to Claim
Bring the original ticket. Alterations or tampering can void it. Sign and print your name on the back as soon as you buy it, before you ever walk into a claim center. That signature establishes you as the owner and protects you if the ticket is lost or stolen on the way. You must be at least 18 to play the lottery or claim a prize in Georgia.
Deadlines to Claim
You have 180 days from the drawing date to claim a prize from a draw game like Powerball or Mega Millions. For an instant or scratch-off ticket, the deadline is 90 days after the game’s official end date, not the date you bought the ticket. Multistate instant games get a longer 180-day window. Miss the deadline and the prize is forfeited; the money goes back to the lottery.2FindLaw. Georgia Code Title 50 – 50-27-24
Claiming by Mail
If driving to an office doesn’t work for you, any prize can be claimed by mail. The trade-off is time and risk: processing takes four to six weeks, and the Georgia Lottery is not responsible for tickets lost in transit.1Georgia Lottery. How to Claim
Sign and complete the back of the ticket, fill out a Winner Claim Form (available at any lottery office or online), and include copies of two forms of identification that together verify your name, signature, and Social Security number. Mail to Georgia Lottery Corporation, P.O. Box 56966, Atlanta, GA 30343. Send it certified or registered so you have proof of delivery and a tracking number.3Georgia Lottery. Winner Claim Form
What Comes Out Before You Get Paid
On any prize over $5,000, the Georgia Lottery withholds 24% for federal income tax on the winnings minus the ticket cost.4Internal Revenue Service. Important Tax Updates On a $1 million prize, roughly $291,900 is taken off the top, leaving about $708,100 before any further tax owed at filing.
The 24% federal withholding is only an estimate. A large prize can push you into the 37% top federal bracket, which in 2026 begins at $640,600 for single filers and $768,700 for joint filers.6Internal Revenue Service. Government debts come out before you’re paid, too. Under Georgia law, qualifying debts can be collected from lottery winnings without the usual garnishment limits. Past-due child support, unpaid state taxes, and other government-held obligations are deducted automatically, and winners are notified at the claim center.7FindLaw. Georgia Code Title 50 – 50-27-53
Ask for Anonymity at the Window
Georgia lets winners of $250,000 or more keep their identity confidential, but you have to request it in writing when you claim. The right isn’t automatic, and skipping it means your name can be released. Winners of prizes below $250,000 have no legal right to anonymity under the Georgia Lottery for Education Act. If your prize qualifies, make the written request one of the first things you do at the claim center.
If You Won as a Group
Office pools and family groups win regularly, and the paperwork matters. The person presenting the ticket fills out IRS Form 5754, listing every member of the group, each person’s share, and their Social Security numbers. The lottery then issues a separate W-2G to each member for their share, so each person is taxed only on what they actually received.8Internal Revenue Service. About Form 5754, Statement by Person(s) Receiving Gambling Winnings
If one person claims the whole prize and then hands cash to the others, the IRS treats the full amount as that person’s income and may treat the distributions as taxable gifts on top. Put a written agreement in place before you claim, and make sure everyone’s information is on Form 5754.
