The document number on a NYS license is an 8- or 10-character code identifying your specific card. On a standard New York driver license or learner permit, it’s printed on the front, in the bottom right corner. On an Enhanced Driver License or a REAL ID, it’s on the back, in the first line of coded text immediately after the prefix “IDUSA.”1New York DMV. Sample New York DMV Photo Documents
Standard Licenses and Permits
For standard New York licenses and permits issued after July 2013, look at the front of the card, bottom right.1New York DMV. An 8-character document number will be all numeric; a 10-character one mixes uppercase letters and numbers.2New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Information about Transaction Entries

Flip the card over. On the back, find the line that begins “IDUSA.” The next 8 or 10 characters are your document number.1New York DMV. Sample New York DMV Photo Documents It’s easy to miss because it sits inside a longer string of coded text rather than standing on its own line.
Don’t Confuse It with the 9-Digit ID Number
New York photo documents carry two numbers that get mixed up constantly. The one printed near the top of the card is your DMV ID number, sometimes called the Client ID. That’s always 9 digits, all numeric, and it stays with you for life no matter how many cards you’re issued.1New York DMV. Sample New York DMV Photo Documents
The document number is different. It identifies the physical card, not you, and it changes every time the DMV issues you a new one, whether through renewal, replacement, or an upgrade to REAL ID.1New York DMV. When You’ll Be Asked for It
The number comes up in a handful of specific situations:
- Linking a MyDMV account to your NY.gov ID, which requires the document number along with your 9-digit DMV ID, the last four of your Social Security number, and your date of birth.3New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. About NY.gov ID
- Online DMV transactions such as renewals and replacements, where the document number verifies you’re holding the most recently issued card.2New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Information about Transaction Entries
- E-filing New York State tax returns, where tax software often asks for both the license number and the document number as identity verification.
If the Number Has Worn Off or You Can’t Read It
The document number is printed in small characters near the edge of the card, and it tends to fade before the rest of the card does. You can’t retrieve it through MyDMV, because the document number is itself one of the credentials MyDMV uses to log you in and link your account.4New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. The practical fix is a duplicate license. New York charges $17.50 for a replacement driver license or learner permit.5New York DMV. Driver License and Learner Permit Fees and Refunds You can apply in person at a DMV office, or online if you already have a MyDMV account set up. The replacement will carry a new document number, which is normal — a new card always does.
