Where Is the Document Number on an NYS License?

The document number on a New York State license is an 8- or 10-character code printed on the back of the card for any license, permit, or non-driver ID issued after January 29, 2014. On cards issued before that date, it sits on the front, in the lower right corner.1New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. How to Tell It Apart From the Client ID

The number most people notice first on a New York license is the 9-digit Client ID, displayed prominently near the top of the front. That is not the document number. The document number is shorter, less prominent, and in a different spot.

Two formats exist. The 8-character version is entirely numeric. The 10-character version mixes uppercase letters and numbers.2New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Why the Number Changes Every Time You Renew

Your Client ID identifies you as a person and stays with you for life. The document number identifies the specific physical card in your hand. Each time the DMV prints you a new card, it generates a fresh document number and deactivates the old one in its database.1New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. The point is fraud prevention. If someone finds or steals an old card of yours, they can’t use it to alter your DMV record, because the document number won’t match what the system expects. The DMV treats the document number as evidence that whoever is making a request is actually holding the current, authorized card.

When You’ll Be Asked for It

The DMV requires the document number whenever you try to do something online that could change your driving record or personal information. Changing your address through the DMV website, for example, requires your Client ID, your document number, your date of birth, your zip code on file, and the last four digits of your Social Security number.3New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Change Your Address The document number is the piece that proves you have the card itself, not just a set of memorized details.

Other online services use the same approach. Ordering a replacement card, checking your license status, and managing account details typically ask for the document number as part of verification. Enter the wrong number, or one from an expired card, and the transaction will be rejected.

Because the number rotates, keep track of it before you need it. A photo of both sides of your license, stored somewhere secure, saves you from squinting at fine print when a transaction is time-sensitive. The number is useless on its own without your other personal details, so a photo kept privately is not the risk it might sound like.

If Your Card Is Lost, Damaged, or Replaced

If you lose your license or the document number becomes unreadable from wear, you need a replacement. The DMV charges $17.50 for a duplicate driver license or learner permit.4New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Driver License and Learner Permit Fees and Refunds You can order one online, by mail, or at a DMV office, and the new card arrives in roughly two to four weeks by mail.

The replacement will carry a brand-new document number. Your old number becomes permanently invalid the moment the new one is generated. Any saved photos or notes with the old number will stop working for online transactions, so update your records once the new card arrives.

The same thing happens after a renewal, an address change that produces a new card, or any other reissue. One rule covers all of them: whatever card is sitting in your wallet right now carries the only document number that works.

A Note on the I-9 and Other Forms

The phrase “document number” shows up in other places too, and the meaning isn’t always the same. On the federal I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification form, a state-issued driver license qualifies as a List B identity document, and the employer records a document number from the card.5U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Employment Eligibility Verification (Form I-9) In practice, most employers record the Client ID, because it’s the most prominent number on the card. If an employer or HR system specifically asks for the “document number,” they likely mean the rotating code on the back. When it isn’t clear, offer both and let them pick.
