Where Is the ID Number on a Michigan State ID?

On a Michigan state ID card, the ID number is printed on the front, near the top, in the format of one letter followed by 12 digits (for example, P800000224322). The same format applies to Michigan driver’s licenses. State law requires every license and state ID to display “the distinguishing number permanently assigned to the licensee,” alongside your name, date of birth, address, photo, and signature.1Michigan Legislature. Michigan Compiled Laws 257.310 – Operators or Chauffeurs License

What the Number Looks Like

The format is consistent across Michigan-issued cards: a single letter, then 12 numeric digits, with no spaces or dashes. It sits in a clear, legible font on the front of the card. If you are holding a Michigan driver’s license, enhanced license, state ID, or enhanced ID, the number is in roughly the same place and follows the same structure.

You will often see this number labeled on the card itself, but even without a label, the one-letter-plus-12-digits pattern is distinctive enough that it is hard to confuse with anything else printed on the front. Your date of birth, expiration date, and height are all shorter and formatted differently.

Is It the Same as My Driver’s License Number?

Yes. Michigan uses the same numbering format for driver’s licenses and non-driver state IDs. When a form, website, bank, or government office asks for your “Michigan driver’s license number” or your “state ID number,” they are asking for this number. If you hold a state ID rather than a license, enter it in the driver’s license field; the system is looking for the format, and your number fits it.

Does the Number Ever Change?

No. The number is assigned to you once and stays with you. The statute describes it as “permanently assigned to the licensee,” and that holds through renewals and replacements.1Michigan Legislature. Michigan Compiled Laws 257.310 – Operators or Chauffeurs License When you renew your card every four years on your birthday, the new card carries the same number as the old one.2Michigan Department of State. License or ID Renewal If your card is lost or stolen and you request a replacement, the replacement carries the same number too.

Letting a card expire does not erase the number. It carries forward when you renew. An expired card itself, though, will not be accepted as valid identification for things like boarding a domestic flight.

Renewing by the Number

Online and self-service renewals in Michigan require your ID number and the last four digits of your Social Security number.2Michigan Department of State. License or ID Renewal If you are renewing through either of those channels, pull the number straight off the front of your current card. The renewal notice that arrives in the mail before your expiration date will also indicate which methods are available to you.

Why This Number Matters

Your Michigan ID number is treated as sensitive personal data under state law. The Identity Theft Protection Act specifically includes “driver license number or state personal identification card number” in its definition of personal information, grouping it with Social Security numbers and financial account numbers.3Michigan Legislature. Michigan Compiled Laws MCL 445.63 – Identity Theft Protection Act Definitions

That classification triggers two things worth knowing. First, any business or government entity that holds your ID number and suffers a data breach must notify you “without unreasonable delay,” unless they determine the breach is unlikely to cause substantial harm. Short delays are permitted to assess the breach, restore security, or accommodate a law enforcement investigation. If you get such a notice, placing a fraud alert or credit freeze and watching your accounts is a sensible next step.

Second, misusing someone else’s number is a felony. Penalties under the Identity Theft Protection Act are:

  • First offense: up to 5 years in prison, a fine of up to $25,000, or both.
  • Second offense: up to 10 years in prison, a fine of up to $50,000, or both.
  • Third or subsequent offense: up to 15 years in prison, a fine of up to $75,000, or both.

A court can order the identity theft sentence to run consecutively with any sentence for a crime committed using the stolen information, so a fraudulent loan taken out with a stolen ID number can draw stacked punishment for both the theft and the fraud. These penalties apply whether the victim is alive or deceased.4Michigan Legislature. Michigan Compiled Laws MCL 445.69 – Identity Theft Protection Act Penalties

Security Features Printed Around the Number

The front of a Michigan ID card includes several anti-tampering features that sit alongside the number. State law requires every license and ID to include “physical security features designed to prevent tampering, counterfeiting, or duplication.”1Michigan Legislature. Michigan Compiled Laws 257.310 – Operators or Chauffeurs License Current cards show the names of Michigan’s five Great Lakes in multicolored text that only appears at certain viewing angles, along with shading and curved-line background patterns engineered to resist replication. A barcode on the back encodes the same information printed on the front, including the ID number, so businesses and agencies can scan the card and confirm nothing has been altered.

What the Number Is Not

A few things the Michigan ID number does not do, because confusion on these points is common:

It is not a Social Security number. Both are classified as personal information under state law, but they serve different functions. Your state ID number cannot be used to file taxes, claim Social Security benefits, or establish work authorization. Those belong to your Social Security number alone.

It is not an immigration document. Michigan requires proof of legal presence before issuing an ID card, but the number itself does not establish immigration status and cannot substitute for an immigration document.5Michigan Department of State. First-Time License or ID Noncitizens with valid documents can obtain a Michigan state ID, and the card will reflect the expiration date of their authorized stay.

It is not linked to biometric data on the card. Michigan law explicitly prohibits including a fingerprint or finger image on any license or state ID.1Michigan Legislature. Michigan Compiled Laws 257.310 – Operators or Chauffeurs License Your photo and signature appear on the card, but no fingerprint is encoded in or tied to the ID number itself.

If You Cannot Read the Number on Your Card

If your card is damaged, faded, or lost and you cannot read the number, you can obtain it through the Secretary of State. A replacement card will carry the same permanent number. In the meantime, if you need the number for a renewal or an online form and cannot find a usable copy, visiting a Secretary of State office with another form of identity verification is the direct route.
