California titles don’t have a field called “title number.” The California DMV uses the title’s issue date as the unique identifier, written as an eight-digit number in YYYYMMDD order. A title issued on March 15, 2024 has a title number of 20240315. The issue date is printed on the face of the certificate, and on versions issued after June 2010 the field appears in red ink so you can spot it quickly.1California State Department of Motor Vehicles. 5.010 Certificate of Title
Why There’s No Printed Number
Most states print a dedicated title number on their certificates. California is one of the few that doesn’t. When a lender, insurer, or out-of-state DMV asks for a “title number,” they want a unique document identifier, and the California issue date reformatted as YYYYMMDD is what fills that slot. The National Motor Vehicle Title Information System specifically tells users to make that conversion when a California title is involved.
This trips people up during out-of-state transactions. If a form requires a title number, enter the issue date as eight digits with no slashes or dashes. Some other states’ systems reject the format or the length because they expect something different, so it helps to call the receiving office ahead of time and tell the clerk you have a California title.
Finding the Issue Date on Your Title
Several versions of the California Certificate of Title are in circulation, and all of them remain legally valid. The issue date sits in a slightly different spot on each.1California State Department of Motor Vehicles. 5.010 Certificate of Title
- Post-June 2010 title: a security thread is embedded in the paper with “State of California” in microprint along it. The issue date on this version is printed in red on the face of the document, which is the easiest to spot.
- December 2003 pink-with-blue-border title: pink face, blue reverse, a white opaque state seal, and the word “VOID” appears if photocopied. The issue date is on the front, but not highlighted in red.
- Older “rainbow” and original pink titles: the issue date is on the face of the certificate, though the layout varies.
If the date on your title reads in a standard format like “5/27/08,” you convert it yourself: year, month, day, each padded to the right number of digits, with no separators. That example becomes 20080527.
If more than one date appears on the document, the one you want is the date closest to the DMV’s processing information. The registration date and the purchase date are separate fields and will give you the wrong number.
Don’t Confuse the Title Number With Other Numbers
Several numbers appear on a California title, and only one of them is what a form means by “title number.”
- The Vehicle Identification Number is a 17-character code assigned to the car itself, not the title document. You’ll also see it in the lower left corner of the dashboard through the windshield and inside the driver’s side door jamb.2eCFR. 49 CFR Part 565 – Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) Requirements
- The license plate number is tied to the vehicle’s registration and changes when plates are replaced or personalized.
- The odometer reading is a snapshot of mileage at the time of transfer, not an identifier.
When a form asks for your title number, it isn’t asking for the VIN or the plate. Those identify the vehicle. The issue date identifies the title document.
If You Don’t Have a Paper Title
If you financed the vehicle and still have a loan, you may not have a physical title to read a date off. California’s Electronic Lien and Title Program keeps the title in a DMV database while a lien is active, and the lienholder gets an electronic notification instead of a paper document. Both formats carry the same legal weight.3California State Department of Motor Vehicles. Electronic Lien and Title Program
Once the loan is paid off, the lienholder sends a satisfaction notice to the DMV and a paper title is mailed to you. If you need title information before that happens, you can request your vehicle record from the DMV online for a $2 fee, which shows the registration and title details on file.4California State Department of Motor Vehicles. If the Title Is Lost or the Date Is Unreadable
If your title is missing, damaged, or illegible in the spot where the issue date should be, request a replacement using form REG 227 (Application for Replacement or Transfer of Title). The form asks for your name as it appears on the current title, your driver’s license number, your address, and the vehicle’s license plate number and VIN.5California DMV. Application for Replacement or Transfer of Title REG 227
You can file REG 227 by mail or in person. The replacement title fee is $28.6California State Department of Motor Vehicles. Registration Fees If your current address doesn’t match what the DMV has on file, you must apply in person and bring proof of ownership along with your driver’s license. Issuing a replacement cancels the original title, so if the lost one turns up later, it is no longer valid. The replacement title will carry a new issue date, which becomes your new title number for any future request.
