Your Idaho driver’s license number is printed on the front of the card, near the top, labeled DLN. It’s nine characters long and typically mixes letters and numbers. If the card isn’t in front of you, Idaho gives you a few ways to look the number up without it.
Where It Appears on the Card
Flip your license face-up and look near the top. The number sits in one of the most prominent spots on the card, next to the “DLN” label. You shouldn’t have to search for it.
The current format is two letters, six digits, then one letter, for a total of nine characters. Something like “AB123456C” is typical. Licenses first issued before January 1, 1993 may instead be nine digits with no letters, and that older format is still valid for identification.1E-Verify. How to Find Your Number Without the Card
Three options, depending on how quickly you need it and whether you want a replacement card at the end.
Look It Up Online
The Idaho Transportation Department runs a free Check Driver Status tool. You’ll enter your first name, middle initial, last name, date of birth, and either your license number or your Social Security number.2Idaho Transportation Department. Check Driver Status Use the Social Security option if the whole reason you’re there is that you’ve forgotten the license number.
If you want a full driver’s record, you can purchase one for $7. The system requires at least two matching identifiers from among your name, license number, Social Security number, and date of birth.3Idaho Transportation Department. Driver Records and Suspensions
Call the DMV

Get a Duplicate in Person
If your card is lost, stolen, or unreadable, you can request a duplicate at a local office. Idaho DMV services are run through county Sheriff’s or Assessor’s Offices, and not every location handles driver’s licenses, so confirm before you drive over.5Idaho Transportation Department. Don’t Confuse the DLN With Other Codes
Idaho licenses carry several numbers, and it’s easy to grab the wrong one when filling out a form.
The “dd” code is a four-digit document discriminator the Idaho Transportation Department uses for internal audit tracking. It isn’t your license number.
The issue date (sometimes labeled “ISS”) and the expiration date are calendar dates, not identifiers, but the digits can look like part of a number if you glance quickly.
The license class, usually just a letter such as “D” for a standard passenger car, tells the reader what you’re allowed to drive. It isn’t part of the DLN either.
Keep the Number to Yourself
Your license number is personal information that can be misused to open fraudulent accounts, produce fake IDs, or pin traffic violations on the wrong person. Share it only when a transaction or legal requirement genuinely calls for it.
Federal law limits how state DMVs can disclose your data. Under the Driver’s Privacy Protection Act, state motor vehicle departments generally cannot release your information except for specific purposes such as law enforcement, court proceedings, insurance claims, or vehicle safety recalls.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 18 U.S. Code 2721 – Prohibition on Release and Use of Certain Personal Information From State Motor Vehicle Records That protection covers the government side only. It doesn’t help if you text a photo of your card to someone or hand it over to be scanned when nothing requires it.
If your license is lost or stolen, report it to the Idaho DMV quickly. Acting fast narrows the window someone has to misuse your information.
