Your Illinois driver’s license number is printed on the front of your physical card, below your photo near your name and address, and it always takes the form of one letter followed by 11 digits (for example, P142-4558-7924). If you can’t find your card, the same number appears on several documents you likely already have, and a few other options can help you recover it.
On the Card Itself
Look on the front of the license, below the photo and close to your personal details. Older card designs label the field “DL #”; newer ones simply display the number in a prominent spot. It may be printed with dashes (P142-4558-7924) or as one continuous string (P14245587924). Either way, you’re counting 12 characters total: one letter plus 11 digits. The opening letter matches the first letter of your last name, which is why the sample card published by the Illinois State Police for a cardholder named “Public” starts with P.1Illinois State Police. Formatting Change to Illinois Driver’s License/ID Cards – REAL ID
Don’t mix up your license number with the document discriminator, a shorter alphanumeric code also printed on the card. The discriminator identifies that specific issuance and changes every time you receive a new card. Your license number stays with you through renewals and replacements.
REAL ID-compliant cards show a gold star in the upper-right corner; standard cards issued in recent years read “Federal Limits Apply” near the top. The license number sits in the same place on both.
If You Don’t Have the Card
Losing track of the card doesn’t mean losing the number. Several routes are usually faster than a trip to a Driver Services office.
Check Paperwork You Already Have
Your number appears on more documents than most people realize. Illinois vehicle registration paperwork often lists it. So does correspondence from your auto insurer, especially the declarations page or a policy renewal notice. If you’ve received a traffic citation, the ticket typically shows your license number as well. Any one of these can save you a trip.
Check Apple Wallet
Illinois supports adding your driver’s license to Apple Wallet on iPhone and Apple Watch.2Illinois Secretary of State. ID in Apple Wallet If you enrolled before misplacing your physical card, your number is accessible through the app. The digital version presents your information to identity readers electronically, so you never hand over your device. This only helps if you set it up previously, but it’s worth a look if you use an iPhone.
Visit a Driver Services Facility
When the paper trail turns up nothing, an in-person visit to an Illinois Secretary of State Driver Services facility is the most reliable option. Bring at least one government-issued photo ID along with proof of your Social Security number and date of birth. Staff can look up your record and help you obtain a duplicate card. The facility finder at ilsos.gov will show you the nearest office and its hours.
Why You Can’t Get It by Phone
The Secretary of State’s office will not read your license number to you over the phone. There is no reliable way to verify your identity through a phone call, so the policy exists to keep someone else from calling in and impersonating you. Don’t waste time trying this route.
Online Services Are Limited
The Secretary of State offers online services through ilsos.gov, but there is no public tool that lets you enter personal details and retrieve your license number. The online services are built around transactions like renewals, address changes, and duplicate requests. If you qualify to request a duplicate card online (you typically need an existing account or a renewal authorization number from a mailed notice), the number will appear on the replacement card when it arrives.
Getting a Replacement Card
If the card is lost, stolen, or damaged, request a duplicate rather than just chasing the number. You can do this online or in person at a Driver Services facility.3Illinois Secretary of State. Duplicate Driver’s License or ID Card The online option won’t work if your license is currently suspended or revoked, or if certain other holds exist on your record.
For an in-person replacement, bring the identity documents required for any Driver Services transaction. If the lost card was a REAL ID-compliant version, replacing it as a REAL ID may require you to present original identity documents again, including proof of lawful status, your Social Security number, and two proofs of Illinois residency. That’s a federal requirement, and it applies even if you’ve provided those documents before.
Keeping the Number Safe Once You Have It
Your license number is more sensitive than it looks. Unlike a credit card, you can’t cancel it and get a new one if it’s exposed. Illinois encodes personal details into the number, so someone who has it may be able to infer information about your name and date of birth.
If you believe your number has been stolen or used fraudulently, report it to the Secretary of State’s office and ask for a fraud alert on your driving record. The FTC’s IdentityTheft.gov site walks you through a personalized recovery plan, including contacting your state motor vehicle office to flag the compromised number.4Federal Trade Commission. IdentityTheft.gov – Recovery Steps As a day-to-day habit, avoid sharing the number on unsecured forms or over email, and don’t give it to a business that lacks a clear legal reason to ask. Store paper and digital copies as carefully as you’d store your Social Security card.
