Where to Mail a Tax Return in Florida: IRS Addresses by Form

If you’re mailing a federal tax return from Florida, the address depends on one thing: whether you’re sending a payment with it. Returns with no payment go to the IRS in Austin, Texas. Returns with a check or money order go to a P.O. box in Charlotte, North Carolina. Florida has no state income tax return for individuals, so the IRS is your only stop.

Form 1040 and 1040-SR Addresses for Florida

The IRS sorts paper returns by state and by whether money is enclosed. Florida sits in a southeastern group that shares processing centers with several other states. Two addresses cover standard individual returns.

Payment enclosed (check, money order, or Form 1040-V voucher):

Both addresses handle Form 1040 and Form 1040-SR, the larger-print version for filers 65 and older. The IRS reassigns processing centers between filing seasons from time to time, so glance at the current year’s Form 1040 instructions before you seal the envelope.

Extension Requests on Form 4868

Form 4868 buys you an automatic six-month extension to file. It does not extend the deadline to pay; interest and the failure-to-pay penalty still run on any balance owed after April 15. The mailing address depends again on whether you’re enclosing money.

Using FedEx, UPS, or DHL Instead of USPS

The IRS accepts certain private carriers, but only specific service levels count as “timely filed.” Ground and basic services do not qualify. Approved tiers include overnight and two-day services such as FedEx Priority Overnight, UPS Next Day Air, and DHL Express Worldwide.5Internal Revenue Service. Private Delivery Services (PDS)

Private carriers cannot deliver to a P.O. box, so the Charlotte and Austin P.O. box addresses above will not work for them. Florida filers using a private delivery service for any return, extension, or payment should send it to the submission processing center’s street address:

Proving You Mailed On Time

Under federal law, the U.S. Postal Service postmark on your envelope counts as your filing date even if the IRS receives it days later.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 7502 – Timely Mailing Treated as Timely Filing A postmark alone, though, doesn’t help much if the IRS later says nothing arrived. Send paper returns by USPS Certified Mail with a return receipt. The few extra dollars buy you a defensible record of the mailing date and the delivery date, which matters most when you owe money or are filing close to April 15.

Before You Seal the Envelope

A few mistakes send paper returns straight back. The IRS will not process an unsigned return, and no refund is released until a valid signature is on file.8Internal Revenue Service. Quality Review of the Tax Return – Signing Form 1040 On a joint return, both spouses must sign.

Attach your W-2s to the front of the form. If federal income tax was withheld, attach any Forms 1099-R and W-2G as well. If you received a corrected W-2 (Form W-2c), include both the original and the correction.9Internal Revenue Service. If you’re enclosing a check or money order, make it payable to “U.S. Treasury,” not “IRS.” Write your name, address, daytime phone number, Social Security number, the tax year, and the form number (for example, “2025 Form 1040”) on the check itself.10Internal Revenue Service. Paper filing doesn’t force you to wait for a paper refund. Enter your bank routing and account numbers on Form 1040 and the IRS will direct-deposit the refund.
