Where to Mail an Amended Tax Return in Texas: Austin IRS Address

If you live in Texas and are mailing a federal amended return, send Form 1040-X to: Department of the Treasury, Internal Revenue Service, Austin, TX 73301-0052. Texas has no individual state income tax, so there’s no state amendment to file alongside it. And before you print the envelope, check whether e-filing works for you, because the IRS now accepts most amended returns electronically and processes them faster.

If You’re Responding to an IRS Notice

One important exception: if the amendment is a response to a specific IRS notice you received, send it to the address printed on that notice instead of the Austin address. The notice address goes to the unit already handling your file.

How to Package the Envelope

You Can E-File Instead

Mailing isn’t your only option. The IRS accepts electronically filed Forms 1040-X for the current tax year and the two prior tax periods through most commercial tax software.4Internal Revenue Service. If you e-file an amendment for tax year 2021 or later, you can have any refund sent by direct deposit. If You Owe, Pay Separately and Pay Fast

You don’t have to wait for the IRS to process the amendment to pay what it shows you owe. Interest on an underpayment runs from the original due date of the return, not from the date you file the 1040-X, and a monthly failure-to-pay penalty accrues on top of that.6Internal Revenue Service. Choose “Amended Return” as the payment reason, enter your bank information, and you’ll get a confirmation number right away. A payment submitted on its due date counts as timely even if the bank withdrawal posts a day or two later.8Internal Revenue Service. After You Send It

Amended returns move slowly. The IRS expects 8 to 12 weeks of processing, and some take up to 16 weeks.9Internal Revenue Service. The IRS “Where’s My Amended Return?” tool is the main way to track progress. You’ll need your Social Security number, date of birth, and the ZIP code from the return.   • Received, meaning the return is in the system (usually about three weeks after mailing).
  • Adjusted, meaning the IRS is reviewing and processing the changes. This is the longest stage.
  • Completed, meaning processing is done and any refund or bill has been issued.
