Mail your Ohio IT 1040 individual income tax return to one of two Columbus PO Boxes depending on whether a payment is enclosed. If you owe money and are sending a check, the address is Ohio Department of Taxation, PO Box 2057, Columbus, Ohio 43270-2057. If you’re filing without a payment, send it to Ohio Department of Taxation, PO Box 2679, Columbus, Ohio 43270-2679. School district returns and standalone payments use different boxes entirely, and the ZIP+4 matters: the Department of Taxation sorts incoming mail by box number before anything is opened.1Ohio Department of Taxation. IT 1040 Addresses by Payment Status
Two addresses, chosen by whether you’re sending money with the return:
- IT 1040 with payment: Ohio Department of Taxation, PO Box 2057, Columbus, Ohio 43270-2057
- IT 1040 without payment: Ohio Department of Taxation, PO Box 2679, Columbus, Ohio 43270-2679
If you’re sending a payment on its own, without a return attached, use the Ohio Universal Payment Coupon (OUPC) and mail it to Ohio Department of Taxation, PO Box 182131, Columbus, Ohio 43218-2131. The OUPC replaced the older IT 40P voucher in 2023, so any instructions still referencing an IT 40P should be treated as directing you to the OUPC.1Ohio Department of Taxation. Mailing Addresses
SD 100 School District Return Addresses
The SD 100 is a separate return from the IT 1040 and goes to its own PO Boxes. As of January 2026, 210 Ohio school districts levy their own income tax, and if you lived in one of those districts for any part of the year and had income, the Department of Taxation recommends filing the SD 100 even if you owe no school district tax. Skipping it can trigger a failure-to-file notice.2Ohio Department of Taxation. School District Income Tax
- SD 100 with payment: Ohio Department of Taxation, PO Box 182389, Columbus, Ohio 43218-2389
- SD 100 without payment: Ohio Department of Taxation, PO Box 182197, Columbus, Ohio 43218-2197
A standalone school district payment using the OUPC also goes to PO Box 182389, the same address as an SD 100 filed with a payment.1Ohio Department of Taxation. Mailing Addresses
Amended Returns
Ohio’s amended forms use the same PO Boxes as the originals. An IT 1040X with a payment goes to PO Box 2057, and without a payment to PO Box 2679. An SD 100X with a payment goes to PO Box 182389, and without a payment to PO Box 182197.1Ohio Department of Taxation. Mailing Addresses
Replies to Billing or Assessment Notices Go Elsewhere
If you’re responding to a notice the Department of Taxation sent you, do not use the return filing boxes. Billing notice replies go to PO Box 182401, Columbus, Ohio 43218-2401. Assessment notice replies go to PO Box 182402, Columbus, Ohio 43218-2402. In practice, always mail to the address printed on the notice itself, since those boxes are current as of the 2026 filing season but Ohio occasionally reassigns them.1Ohio Department of Taxation. How to Put the Envelope Together
Place the signed return on top, followed by W-2s and any 1099s. If you owe, enclose a check or money order along with the OUPC payment coupon. Make the check payable to “Ohio Treasurer of State” and write your Social Security number on the memo line so the payment can be matched to your account if it gets separated from the return.
Weigh the envelope or add a second stamp. A return with multiple wage statements and schedules often exceeds one ounce, and an under-stamped envelope comes back to you instead of reaching Columbus. Certified mail through USPS gives you a dated receipt, which is your proof of timely filing if the Department of Taxation later claims your return arrived late.
One timing note worth keeping in mind as you mail: a federal extension from the IRS is automatically honored by Ohio and pushes your filing deadline to October 15, but it does not extend the time to pay. Any balance owed is still due by April 15, and interest accrues from that date under Ohio Revised Code Section 5703.47.3Ohio Department of Taxation. Individual Filing Season Tips
After You Mail
Paper returns take longer to appear in the Department of Taxation’s system than electronic filings, and the Department notes that processing can take several weeks, with the lag longest in March, April, and May. If your return shows as “Manual Review” and more than 120 days have passed, call 1-800-282-1780. The same number applies if a refund check was issued but never arrived (wait at least 30 days after the issue date before calling) or if you’re holding a check older than 90 days that can no longer be cashed.
