Where to Mail Your Indiana Tax Return: Addresses, Payment, Proof

Mail your Indiana individual income tax return to one of two P.O. Boxes in Indianapolis, depending on whether you are sending payment with it. If you owe tax and are enclosing a check, the return goes to P.O. Box 7224. If you are not enclosing payment, including every refund return, it goes to P.O. Box 40. Sending the return to the wrong box can delay processing by weeks, so this is the first thing to get right when deciding where to mail your Indiana tax return.1Indiana Department of Revenue. The Two Addresses

Both addresses apply to all individual return types: Form IT-40 (full-year residents), Form IT-40PNR (part-year residents and nonresidents), and Form IT-40RNR (full-year residents of Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, or Wisconsin whose only Indiana income is wages).

With payment enclosed:

Indiana Department of Revenue
P.O. Box 7224
Indianapolis, IN 46207-7224

Without payment (refund or zero-balance returns):

Indiana Department of Revenue
P.O. Box 40
Indianapolis, IN 46206-0040

Amended returns on Form IT-40X use the same split: Box 7224 if additional tax is owed and payment is included, Box 40 for everything else.1Indiana Department of Revenue. Mail in Tax Forms

One wrinkle to be aware of: if you pay your balance electronically through INTIME but still mail a paper return, the envelope itself contains no payment, so it goes to P.O. Box 40.

What to Put in the Envelope

Assemble the return with the main form on top and all completed schedules behind it in numerical order. Depending on your situation, that may include Schedule 1 (add-backs), Schedule 2 (deductions), Schedule 5 (credits and withholding), Schedule 6 (offset credits), Schedule 7 (which carries the signature authorization language), Schedule IN-DEP (dependent information), and, for full-year residents, Schedule CT-40 for county tax.2Indiana Department of Revenue. Behind the schedules, place every withholding statement that supports the numbers on your return: W-2s, 1099s, and any IN K-1 forms showing Indiana state or county tax withheld.3Indiana Department of Revenue. IT-40 Full Year Resident Individual Income Tax Booklet 2025

Do not staple or paper-clip anything. The Department scans these returns, and metal fasteners jam the equipment. Place everything loosely in the envelope.

Sign and date the return before sealing it. On a joint return, both spouses have to sign. The IT-40 booklet directs you to read the authorization language on Schedule 7 before signing, and Schedule 7 needs to be in the envelope with the return.3Indiana Department of Revenue. How to Send Payment

Make the check, money order, or cashier’s check payable to Indiana Department of Revenue, in U.S. funds. Write your Social Security number and “2025 IT-40” on the check so the Department can match it to your return if the two get separated in processing.

Electronic payment is the alternative. INTIME, the Department’s online portal at intime.dor.in.gov, accepts bank-account payments at no charge and credit or debit card payments for a fee, and issues a confirmation number once the payment goes through.4Indiana Department of Revenue. Payments and Billing

Proof You Mailed on Time

A USPS postmark establishes your filing date, but a plain postmark leaves no record on your end if a dispute ever arises. USPS Certified Mail costs $5.30 and gives you a receipt with a tracking number. Adding a Return Receipt for a signature card runs $4.40, or $2.82 for the electronic version, which brings documented proof of both mailing and delivery to under ten dollars.5USPS. Insurance and Extra Services

Private carriers are an option, but only certain IRS-designated services qualify for the “timely mailing is timely filing” rule. FedEx Priority Overnight, UPS Next Day Air, and DHL Express are among the qualifying services; standard ground options from the same carriers are not.6Internal Revenue Service. Private Delivery Services PDS One catch: private carriers cannot deliver to P.O. Boxes. If you ship by FedEx, UPS, or DHL, you need the Department’s physical street address, which is posted on the Department of Revenue’s mail-in forms page.

Business Returns Go Elsewhere

The two individual addresses above do not apply to business filings. Corporate returns on Form IT-20 go to P.O. Box 7087 with payment and P.O. Box 7231 without. S corporation, partnership, and fiduciary returns each have their own designated addresses. Check the Department’s mail-in forms page for the address that matches your form type and payment status.1Indiana Department of Revenue. Mail in Tax Forms
