To check the status of your Connecticut state tax refund, use the “Where’s my Refund?” tool inside the myconneCT portal at the Department of Revenue Services website, or call the DRS automated refund line at 800-382-9463 or 860-297-5962.1Connecticut State Department of Revenue Services. Check the Status of Your Income Tax Refund Both channels pull from the same database and will ask for your Social Security Number or ITIN, the exact refund amount from your return, and the tax year. Electronically filed returns show up far sooner than paper ones, which take 10 to 12 weeks to process.
What You Need Before You Check
Three pieces of information unlock the status screen. The Social Security Number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number of the primary filer listed on the return. The whole-dollar refund amount shown on Line 25 of your Form CT-1040. And the tax year of the return you are asking about.
The refund amount has to match exactly. A rounded or estimated figure will not pull up your record, because the system compares against the precise number you filed. If you are checking a joint return, use the SSN of the spouse listed first on the return.

Check by Phone
DRS runs an automated refund line 24 hours a day. From inside Connecticut but outside the Greater Hartford calling area, dial 800-382-9463. From anywhere else, dial 860-297-5962.1Connecticut State Department of Revenue Services. If you need to speak with a representative about a delayed paper return, use the 860-297-5962 number during business hours.
How Long It Takes
Paper returns take 10 to 12 weeks to process because of filing-season volume and the manual data entry involved.1Connecticut State Department of Revenue Services. Check the Status of Your Income Tax Refund Until a paper return is keyed in, it does not appear in the lookup system at all, and DRS staff cannot pull it up either. If more than 12 weeks have passed since you mailed your return and nothing shows, that is the point to call.
Electronic returns move through much faster. DRS does not publish a fixed day count for e-filed returns, but they generally appear in the system well ahead of paper filings. Once your status reads processed, allow at least two business days for a direct deposit to post to your bank account.1Connecticut State Department of Revenue Services. Check the Status of Your Income Tax Refund If you asked for a paper check, add mail time on top of that.
What Each Status Message Means
A processed status means DRS has finished reviewing your return and issued the refund. Watch your bank account over the next few business days if you chose direct deposit.
A received-but-under-review status means the return is in the queue. No action is needed unless DRS contacts you separately by mail.
No record at all usually means the return has not been entered into the system yet. This is normal for paper returns during peak filing season. Wait out the standard processing window before calling.
Why a Refund Gets Delayed
Identity Verification
Connecticut’s Refund Protection Program flags returns that show signs of identity theft or fraud. If yours is flagged, DRS mails a notice directing you to the department’s website to answer security questions that only you should be able to answer.3CT.gov. Refund Protection Program The refund will not move until you complete that step. The federal IRS Identity Protection PIN is not used for Connecticut returns; this is a separate state process.4Internal Revenue Service. Mismatched Income or Math Errors
If the figures on your return do not line up with what employers and financial institutions reported to DRS, the return gets pulled for manual review. Common triggers include W-2 wages that do not match, missing 1099 income, and arithmetic errors. These reviews can add several weeks. DRS will typically send a letter explaining the issue and asking for documents if any are needed.
Returns Filed for a Deceased Taxpayer
Final returns filed on behalf of someone who has died take longer because of the additional documentation and manual review involved. At the federal level, a court-appointed personal representative filing an original return must attach a copy of the court certificate of appointment, and amended-return or Form 843 situations also require IRS Form 1310.5IRS.gov. Form 1310 Statement of Person Claiming Refund Due a Deceased Taxpayer Connecticut may require comparable documentation for the state return.
If Your Refund Is Smaller Than Expected: Offsets
Even after a return is fully processed, Connecticut can redirect part or all of your refund to pay certain debts before sending you the remainder. DRS receives information about outstanding liabilities from other state agencies, out-of-state agencies, and the federal government, and the law requires DRS to forward the money to the agency owed.6CT.gov. Treasury Offset Program
Debts that commonly trigger an offset include:
- Past-due Connecticut income tax. DRS sends a Notice of Intent to Offset by certified mail before taking this step.
- Unpaid child support being enforced by the state.
- Federal debts, which can be intercepted under the federal Debt Collection Improvement Act through the Treasury Offset Program.
DRS notifies you in writing when a refund is offset, including the amount redirected and the agency that received it. The notice explains how to dispute the offset if you believe it was made in error.6CT.gov. Treasury Offset Program
Interest If Connecticut Pays You Late
When the state holds your refund beyond the normal processing period, you may be owed interest on the overpayment. For refunds claimed on amended returns, no interest accrues for the first 90 days after the amended return is filed; interest begins on the 91st day.7Justia Law. Connecticut Code Title 12 – Section 12-227 – Interest on Refunds An amended return filed before the original due date is treated as filed on that due date for this calculation. The applicable interest rate is set separately from these timing rules.
Deadline to Claim an Older Refund
Connecticut does not let unclaimed refunds sit forever. State law provides a window, generally tied to the applicable statute of limitations, after which an unclaimed overpayment is forfeited. The commissioner may credit an overpayment against other tax you owe and refund the balance, but only within the period the law allows.8Justia Law. Connecticut Code Title 12 – Section 12-739 – Credit of Overpayments If you have unfiled Connecticut returns from prior years, file them as soon as you can to protect any refund still owed to you.
