To check where your Illinois tax refund is, use the Illinois Department of Revenue’s “Where’s My Refund?” tool at mytax.illinois.gov. Most electronically filed refunds arrive within about four weeks.1Illinois Department of Revenue. Where’s My Refund? If yours is taking longer, the delay almost always traces to a specific cause: a return error, an identity verification request, or a debt offset.
Where to Check Your Refund
Two different state agencies touch your refund, and checking both gives you a clearer answer than relying on just one.
The IDOR Tool
IDOR’s tracker tells you whether your return has been received, whether it’s still processing or finished, the expected timeframe for your deposit or check, and whether IDOR sent you a notice adjusting the refund amount.1Illinois Department of Revenue. Where’s My Refund? It updates once per business day, so checking repeatedly won’t surface new information.2Illinois Department of Revenue. Are You Waiting for Your Illinois Tax Refund
You’ll need your Social Security number and the exact refund amount from your return to log in.2Illinois Department of Revenue. Are You Waiting for Your Illinois Tax Refund The refund amount works as a security check, so being off by a dollar locks you out. If you’re not sure, the refund figure is on Line 38 of your filed IL-1040.3Illinois Department of Revenue. 2025 IL-1040 Instructions
The Comptroller’s Tracker
IDOR processes your return and approves the refund, but the Illinois Comptroller’s Office actually issues the payment.1Illinois Department of Revenue. Where’s My Refund? The Comptroller runs a separate tracker at myrefund.illinoiscomptroller.gov. Enter your Social Security number, first name, and last name to see whether the Comptroller has received your processed refund data from IDOR.4Illinois State Comptroller. My Refund – Illinois State Comptroller
If IDOR’s tool says your refund is approved but the money hasn’t landed, the Comptroller’s site is where you’ll find out whether the payment has actually gone out. The Comptroller can’t issue anything until IDOR transmits the processed return.4Illinois State Comptroller. My Refund – Illinois State Comptroller
How Long It Should Take
How you filed, and how you asked to be paid, both drive the timeline.
- E-filed returns: Refunds generally arrive within about four weeks, assuming no errors or security holds.1Illinois Department of Revenue. Where’s My Refund?
- Paper returns: A mailed IL-1040 has to be entered manually and takes roughly four to eight weeks under normal conditions. Peak filing season stretches this out.1Illinois Department of Revenue. Where’s My Refund?
- Amended returns: If you filed an IL-1040-X, the wait is much longer. IDOR asks that you wait at least six months from the date you submitted the amendment before contacting them about status.5Illinois Department of Revenue. Amending My Return (Form IL-1040)
Direct deposit shaves days off the final step. E-filing with direct deposit is the fastest combination, and IDOR specifically recommends it.6Illinois Department of Revenue. How Do I Check the Status of My Individual Income Tax Refund? If your bank rejects the deposit because of a wrong routing or account number, the state typically mails a paper check instead, adding weeks.
What the Status Messages Mean
The IDOR tracker moves your return through a predictable sequence. Exact wording varies.
- Return received: IDOR has your filing. No review has happened yet.
- Processing: Your return is being checked for accuracy, compliance, and identity verification. Most delays surface here, because a flagged return stays in this stage until resolved.
- Refund approved: IDOR has confirmed the amount and released it to the Comptroller for payment.1Illinois Department of Revenue. Where’s My Refund?
- Refund issued: The Comptroller has authorized payment. Direct deposits usually post within a few business days; checks take longer due to mail.
The tool also tells you if your return didn’t result in a refund, or if IDOR sent you a notice changing the amount.1Illinois Department of Revenue. Where’s My Refund? If either message appears and you weren’t expecting it, watch the mail for an IDOR letter explaining the adjustment.
Why Your Refund Might Be Delayed
Errors on the Return
Math mistakes on your IL-1040, or mismatches between your state and federal income, pull your return out of the normal queue. When IDOR finds a calculation error, they adjust the return and mail you a notice explaining the change. Flagged returns take longer because the return has to go through added review before a corrected refund can be approved.1Illinois Department of Revenue. Where’s My Refund?
Identity Verification Letters
This is probably the most common cause of an unexpectedly long wait, and it catches people off guard because the letter can look like junk mail. IDOR’s Anti-Fraud Unit may send a letter requiring you to prove your identity before the refund is released. You have 60 days to respond with two documents: one photo ID (driver’s license, passport, or state ID) and one proof of your name and the address on your return (utility bill, bank statement, or pay stub).7Illinois Department of Revenue. Identity Verification Letters Information
You can respond electronically through MyTax Illinois using the Letter ID printed on the notice, which is faster and more secure. Without the Letter ID, you’ll have to mail copies of your documents to the Anti-Fraud Unit in Springfield.7Illinois Department of Revenue. Identity Verification Letters Information Send copies only, never originals.
Ignoring the letter is the worst move. Miss the 60-day window and your refund stays frozen; the return won’t process until IDOR can verify you filed it.
Refund Offsets
An offset redirects part or all of your refund to cover a debt. The Comptroller’s Office can offset money the state owes you and apply it to a delinquent state tax balance.8Illinois Department of Revenue. Collection Process Your Illinois refund can also be offset for other government debts such as past-due child support or federal obligations through the federal Treasury Offset Program.9Internal Revenue Service. Reduced Refund
If an offset happens, you’ll get a notice naming the debt and the amount taken. Anything left over is sent to you normally.
