A$AP Rocky went to jail once: for about a month in Sweden in 2019, after a street fight in Stockholm led to his arrest and an assault conviction that ended in a suspended sentence. He was later charged with felony assault in Los Angeles over a 2021 Hollywood shooting, posted bond the same day he was booked, and a jury acquitted him of all charges in February 2025. So the short answer to why A$AP Rocky went to jail is the Stockholm case; the Los Angeles case, despite carrying up to 24 years in prison, never resulted in incarceration.
The Stockholm Arrest
On June 30, 2019, Rocky (legal name Rakim Mayers) and members of his entourage got into a physical altercation with a 19-year-old man named Mustafa Jafari on a street in Stockholm. Rocky said Jafari and another man had been following his group and appeared to be under the influence of drugs. Jafari’s lawyer said the violence began when a bodyguard grabbed Jafari by the neck and dragged him away. Video surfaced showing Rocky and others punching a man on the ground, and a separate clip showed one of the men hitting the bodyguard with headphones.1TIME. ASAP Rocky Sweden Trial Prison

Fredrik Wallin, the prison’s governor, said the facility was in “good condition” after renovations, that cells contained a bed with a mattress, a desk, and a TV, and that all prisoners received three meals a day.4BBC News. The Swedish Conviction and Suspended Sentence
Rocky and two members of his entourage, David Rispers Jr. and Bladimir Corniel, were charged with assault. Prosecutors alleged the three had kicked and beaten Jafari, and sought at least six months in jail for Rocky.5NBC News. On August 14, 2019, the Stockholm District Court found all three defendants guilty. The court rejected the self-defense claim, finding the defendants were not facing an imminent criminal attack. Judge Per Lennerbrant determined the assault was not “of such a serious nature” as to warrant further incarceration, so the court issued a conditional (suspended) sentence with a two-year probationary period.7CNN. The 2021 Hollywood Shooting Allegation
On November 6, 2021, Rocky was involved in a confrontation with Terell Ephron, a former childhood friend and fellow member of the Harlem-based rap collective A$AP Mob who went by A$AP Relli. The incident took place near The W Hotel in Hollywood around 10:15 p.m.10Los Angeles Times. Before opening statements, prosecutors offered Rocky a plea deal: plead guilty to one felony count in exchange for a 180-day jail sentence. He rejected it. The prosecution, led by Deputy District Attorney John Lewin, relied heavily on Ephron, who spent nearly five days on the stand. He testified that Rocky pointed a gun at him, threatened “I’ll kill you right now,” and fired twice. Prosecutors presented surveillance footage that captured audio of gunfire, though no video of the actual shooting existed, along with text messages showing angry exchanges in the lead-up to the confrontation. Ephron testified that he returned to the scene later that night and personally retrieved two shell casings, which he turned over to police.11BBC News. ASAP Rocky Assault Trial
Tacopina’s defense had two pillars: that the weapon was a prop gun firing blanks, and that Ephron was lying to extort Rocky. Defense witnesses, including A$AP Mob member Jamel Phillips (A$AP Twelvyy) and Rocky’s tour manager Louis Levin, testified that Rocky had been carrying a starter pistol obtained during a music video shoot for the song “D.M.B.” as a security deterrent following a home invasion.18Courthouse News. ASAP Rocky Adds More Details to Buttress Prop Gun Defense No firearm was ever produced in evidence. Police did find a 9mm magazine loaded with live ammunition in Rocky’s closet; the defense said it belonged to the tour manager, who testified he had accidentally left it there.
Tacopina also introduced a recording of a voice resembling Ephron’s saying, “Once I walk away, when I get my cash, the case will get way weaker,” framing the prosecution as an extortion scheme.19CBS News. The Civil Cases Still Pending
The criminal acquittal did not end the Hollywood matter entirely. Ephron filed a civil assault and battery lawsuit against Rocky in August 2022, and a separate defamation suit in September 2023 against both Rocky and Tacopina, claiming that Tacopina’s public characterizations of his shooting claims as “extortion” and a “get-rich-quick scheme” damaged his reputation and led to death threats.23ABC News.
