A Wisconsin DMV license plate renewal can be handled online, by mail, in person at a DMV service center, or through an authorized registration agent. The base annual fee for a passenger car is $85, with extra costs for heavier trucks, electric or hybrid vehicles, and any local wheel tax where you live. Renew before your expiration date to avoid a $10 late fee, and don’t drive on expired plates: the traffic forfeiture starts at up to $200.
What It Costs
The standard annual registration fee for an automobile is $85.1Wisconsin State Legislature. Wisconsin Code 341.25 – Annual and Biennial Registration Fees Light trucks and dual-purpose vehicles pay by gross vehicle weight. Effective October 1, 2025, the fee is $100 for vehicles up to 6,000 pounds, $116.60 up to 8,000 pounds, and $170.50 up to 10,000 pounds. Heavier trucks pay progressively more, all the way to $2,816 at 80,000 pounds.2Wisconsin Department of Transportation. Fee Schedule
Electric and Hybrid Surcharges
Fully electric vehicles registered as automobiles or light trucks up to 8,000 pounds pay an extra $175 per year. Hybrids pay $75. Wisconsin’s hybrid definition is broad: any vehicle that can use both electricity and gasoline, diesel, or an alternative fuel counts, so plug-in hybrids and conventional hybrids both owe the surcharge.3Wisconsin Department of Transportation. Vehicle Fuel Surcharge
Local Wheel Tax
Many Wisconsin municipalities and counties charge an annual wheel tax that gets collected with your state fee. There is no state cap. Current municipal amounts range from $10 in places like Boscobel and Kaukauna to $50 in Eau Claire. Milwaukee charges $41, Madison $40, and Green Bay $25. Several counties layer their own wheel tax on top: Milwaukee County adds $30, Dane County adds $28 (rising to $40 for registrations beginning on or after May 1, 2026), and Marathon County adds $25. If your city has a wheel tax and sits inside a county that also has one, you pay both.4Wisconsin Department of Transportation. Municipal or County Vehicle Registration Fee (Wheel Tax)
Emissions Testing (Southeastern Counties Only)
Emissions testing applies only if your vehicle is kept in Kenosha, Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine, Sheboygan, Washington, or Waukesha County. Anywhere else in Wisconsin, you can skip this step. In the seven affected counties, testing is required every other year for gasoline, natural gas, and hybrid vehicles model years 1996 through 2006 under 8,501 pounds GVWR, and for diesel, gasoline, natural gas, or hybrid vehicles model year 2007 and newer up to 14,000 pounds GVWR. You can test up to 180 days before your renewal date, and WisDOT will not let you renew until a passing result is on file. If your vehicle fails, you need to repair and retest. For a vehicle that isn’t drivable, Form MV2472 provides a temporary exemption.5Wisconsin Department of Transportation. Emission Test
What You Need Before You Start
The simplest path uses the renewal notice WisDOT mails before your plates expire. It lists your plate number, vehicle details, and the total owed. If it never arrived or you lost it, download Form MV2016 (Substitute Renewal Notice) from the WisDOT site and fill in your plate number, vehicle make and year, and the 17-character VIN from your dashboard or title.6Wisconsin Department of Transportation. License Plate Renewal
To renew online you’ll need the last four digits of your VIN, your plate number, a valid email address, and payment. Wisconsin does not require proof of insurance to renew registration, which sometimes trips up people moving in from states that do.
Four Ways to Renew
Online
The fastest option. On the WisDOT registration renewal portal, enter your plate number and VIN digits and pay by credit card, debit card, PayPal, or checking or savings account. Your expiration date updates in the state system immediately, and you get an email confirmation to use as proof. The new Certificate of Registration and sticker arrive by mail within 7 to 10 business days.7Wisconsin Department of Transportation. Processing Time for DMV Products
By Mail
Send the renewal notice (or completed MV2016) with a check or money order payable to “Registration Fee Trust” to the address on the notice. For automobiles and light trucks that address is Wisconsin Department of Transportation, P.O. Box 3279, Milwaukee, WI 53201-3279. Trucks, buses, and motor homes use a different P.O. box ending in 3290. Most plates, stickers, and certificates ship within 10 days of processing but can take up to three weeks to arrive.7Wisconsin Department of Transportation. Processing Time for DMV Products
In Person
Many DMV customer service centers process renewals, but not all do. Check the WisDOT site before driving over. A $3 counter service fee applies per renewal on top of your registration fees.6Wisconsin Department of Transportation. License Plate Renewal
Authorized Registration Agent
WisDOT authorizes certain businesses, including some grocery stores, financial institutions, and retail outlets, to process renewals as agents. They connect to the state system and can issue proof of payment on the spot. These agents may charge up to $16.25 per transaction as a service fee.6Wisconsin Department of Transportation. When Your Sticker Arrives
WisDOT mails a new Certificate of Vehicle Registration and a validation sticker with the updated expiration year. Online renewals arrive fastest, in 7 to 10 business days. Mail and in-person renewals can take up to three weeks.7Wisconsin Department of Transportation. Processing Time for DMV Products
You don’t have to park the car in the meantime. The email confirmation from an online renewal, or the receipt from an in-person or mail transaction, is valid proof of registration if you’re pulled over. Once the sticker arrives, put it on your rear plate right away to stay in compliance with display rules.8Wisconsin Department of Transportation. Vehicle Registration
Renewing Late and Driving on Expired Plates
Missing your expiration date adds a $10 late fee to the normal registration cost. That fee applies to automobiles, light trucks, motorcycles, and mopeds renewed after expiration.
Driving on expired plates is a separate problem. Operating an unregistered or improperly registered vehicle is a traffic forfeiture in Wisconsin. For automobiles and other vehicles rated 10,000 pounds GVWR or less, the fine can reach $200. Heavier vehicles face fines up to $500. The court will also order you to register the vehicle and pay the required fees.9Wisconsin State Legislature. Wisconsin Code 341.03 – Operating Vehicle After Suspension, Revocation, or Cancellation of Registration Renewing a day late online is far cheaper than a traffic stop a week later.
Replacement Stickers and Certificates
If your sticker or Certificate of Registration is lost, stolen, or damaged, you can order a replacement without renewing. A duplicate Certificate of Registration costs $2, and you can apply online, by mail with Form MV2026, or in person. In-person requests carry an added $5 counter service fee.10Wisconsin Department of Transportation. Replace Your Title, Plates or Stickers
For the online request you’ll need your Wisconsin driver license or ID number, the last four digits of your Social Security number, your date of birth, and the vehicle’s VIN. If you request just a certificate with no stickers, WisDOT will email it for you to print. If your registration is already expired, renew instead. Renewal automatically sends fresh stickers and a new certificate.10Wisconsin Department of Transportation. Replace Your Title, Plates or Stickers
Non-Operation Statement for a Vehicle You’re Not Driving
If a vehicle is sitting unused and you’d rather not pay to renew it, Wisconsin lets you file a non-operation statement instead. It’s part of the MV2016 form, and you certify the dates the vehicle was not driven on public roads. WisDOT only accepts the statement once one full registration period has elapsed since the vehicle was last registered in Wisconsin. Vehicles on a biennial cycle need to have been off the road for a full registration year to qualify. Filing mid-cycle for a partial refund is not an option; the vehicle has to have been idle for the whole period.
