Wisconsin fishing seasons run on multiple calendars depending on species and water. The general inland season for walleye, northern pike, and most other game fish opens Saturday, May 2, 2026 and runs through March 7, 2027.1Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Fishing Seasons Trout anglers get an earlier start in January under catch-and-release rules, bass follow a zone system that splits the state in half, panfish never close, and the Great Lakes have their own schedule. The dates that matter to you depend on what you’re after and where you’re fishing.
Walleye, Northern Pike, and Musky
Walleye and northern pike share the general inland window: May 2, 2026 through March 7, 2027.1Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Fishing Seasons Both species are off-limits on inland waters once the season closes in early March, and they stay closed until the following May opener.
Muskellunge on inland waters opens the same May 2 date but closes earlier, on December 31, 2026.1Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Fishing Seasons No late-winter window on musky, so plan accordingly if a trophy fish is the goal.
Bass Seasons and the Northern/Southern Zone Split
Bass is where anglers trip up most. Wisconsin splits inland waters into a Northern Bass Zone and a Southern Bass Zone, and the boundary is a stitched-together line. It follows State Highway 77 east from the St. Croix River to State Highway 27, south on Highway 27 to State Highway 64, then east on Highway 64 to Marinette and due east to Green Bay. A separate segment runs State Highway 29 from the Fox River east to Kewaunee and out to Lake Michigan.2Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Fishing Season Definitions If your lake sits anywhere near those highways, confirm which zone it falls in before you go.
In the Southern Bass Zone, largemouth and smallmouth harvest both open the first Saturday in May and run through the first Sunday in March. In the Northern Bass Zone, largemouth harvest opens the first Saturday in May, but smallmouth harvest doesn’t begin until the third Saturday in June. In the weeks between those two openers up north, any smallmouth you catch has to go back.3Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass Seasons
Outside those harvest windows, catch-and-release bass fishing is allowed at all other times of year in both zones.3Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass Seasons
Inland Trout
Trout runs on its own calendar. An early catch-and-release season on inland streams opens at 5 a.m. on January 3, 2026 and runs through April 3, 2026.1Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Fishing Seasons Everything caught during this window has to be released.
The general inland trout season on streams, springs, and spring ponds opens April 4, 2026 at 5 a.m. and runs through October 15, 2026. On inland lakes and ponds, trout harvest opens later, on May 2, 2026, and also closes October 15.1Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Fishing Seasons That April 4 stream opener is often the first harvest opportunity of the year for any species.
Fishing for trout on inland waters requires an inland trout stamp, $10 for residents and nonresidents, in addition to a base fishing license.4Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Fishing Licenses
Species That Stay Open Year-Round
Several species have no closed season on inland waters. Panfish are the big ones: bluegill, pumpkinseed, crappie, and yellow perch are open all year. Rough fish like carp and suckers stay open too, and so do catfish and bullheads, which can be taken by hook and line, bow, crossbow, or by hand.
Open all year doesn’t mean unlimited. The statewide default daily bag limit for panfish is 25 fish combined across species.5Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Wisconsin Fishing Regulations – Daily Bag Limits Individual lakes often set tighter limits, especially high-pressure waters near population centers. Check posted signage at the launch and the DNR’s online regulations tool for your specific water.
Great Lakes Seasons
Lake Michigan, Green Bay, and Lake Superior waters follow a different calendar from inland. Trout and salmon on Lake Michigan and its tributaries, along with Green Bay and major Green Bay tributaries, are open continuously. Catfish, whitefish, cisco, and rock bass also stay open all year on these waters. A Great Lakes salmon and trout stamp ($10) is required in addition to the base license for anyone targeting trout or salmon.4Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Fishing Licenses
Not every Great Lakes species is open year-round. Yellow perch on Lake Michigan runs June 16, 2026 through April 30, 2027. Green Bay yellow perch runs May 20, 2026 through March 15, 2027. Great Lakes muskellunge around Green Bay and northern Lake Michigan tributaries opens on the Saturday nearest Memorial Day (May 23, 2026) and closes December 31. Lake sturgeon has no open season on Lake Michigan, Green Bay, or their tributaries.
Bass rules on the Great Lakes also diverge from inland. Around the Door County islands and waters within five miles of the Door County shoreline, smallmouth harvest doesn’t open until July 1, and no catch-and-release is allowed before that date. These are some of the most restrictive bass rules in Wisconsin.
Boundary Waters With Other States
Waters shared with Minnesota, Iowa, and Michigan have separate regulations established in the Wisconsin Administrative Code.6Wisconsin State Legislature. Wisconsin Administrative Code NR 20.05 On Minnesota-Wisconsin boundary waters, each state’s residents fish under their own state’s license, and where the two states’ rules differ on bag limits or season dates, the more liberal rules apply only to anglers licensed by the more liberal state and only in that state’s territorial waters.7Minnesota Office of the Revisor of Statutes. Chapter 6266, Boundary Waters Fishing Regulations A Wisconsin license does not automatically unlock Minnesota’s bag limits on a shared river. Know where the state line falls.
Sturgeon Spearing on the Winnebago System
The Lake Winnebago system runs a winter sturgeon spearing season through the ice. The 2026 season opened February 14. It’s permit-only, with daily and season harvest caps that can trigger an early closure, and tags are distributed through a preference system where demand far exceeds supply. Outside the Winnebago system, sturgeon opportunities are extremely limited: Lake Michigan, Green Bay, and their tributaries have no open sturgeon season at all.
Free Fishing Weekends
Wisconsin holds two free fishing weekends each year when no license is required. In 2026, those dates are January 17–18 and June 6–7. Every other regulation still applies: bag limits, size limits, and season closures all remain in effect. These weekends are a low-commitment way to introduce someone new to the sport.
Fishing Out of Season or Without a License
Penalties are tiered. Fishing without a required license carries a forfeiture of up to $1,000 plus a restitution surcharge equal to the cost of the license you should have bought. Violations where the value of illegally taken fish falls between $300 and $1,000 jump to a fine of $1,000 to $5,000 and possible imprisonment of up to 30 days. Value above $1,000 makes the offense a Class I felony.8Wisconsin State Legislature. Wisconsin Code 29 – Section 29.971
Courts can also revoke DNR-issued licenses and bar you from obtaining new ones for multiple years, and equipment forfeiture is on the table. Wardens patrol popular waters heavily during opening weekends and on high-profile fisheries. Check the current season dates and bag limits for your specific water body before you launch.
