To work as a security guard in Wisconsin, you need a private security person permit issued by the Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS). The core Wisconsin security guard license requirements are straightforward: you must be at least 18, have no unpardoned felony convictions, be sponsored by a licensed private detective agency, pass a state and federal background check through Fieldprint, and pay $27 for a regular permit or $45 if you want a temporary permit to start work while your background check clears.1Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services. Who Qualifies for a Permit
Wisconsin Statute 440.26 and Administrative Code SPS 31.02 set the eligibility floor. You must be 18 or older.3Wisconsin State Legislature. Wisconsin Code 440.26 – Private Security Permit
Criminal history is handled in two tiers. A felony conviction anywhere in the country is an absolute bar to a permit unless you have received a pardon for that felony. DSPS states plainly that there are no exceptions.4Department of Safety and Professional Services. Private Security Person Misdemeanors are different. DSPS has discretion to deny based on a misdemeanor record, but it is not automatic, and the department weighs factors like how recent the offense was and whether it relates to security work.
SPS 31.02 adds qualitative standards on top of the criminal check. DSPS can deny an application if you use drugs or alcohol to a degree that would impair your duties, or if you have a physical, emotional, or mental condition that could adversely affect your work.5Wisconsin State Legislature. Wisconsin Code SPS 31.02(3)(b) – Qualifications for Private Security Person Permit These are judgment calls made case by case.
You Cannot Hold a Permit on Your Own
This is the detail that trips up most applicants. A private security permit in Wisconsin only exists in connection with a licensed private detective agency that employs you. The agency must certify in writing that it will employ you and take responsibility for your conduct, and DSPS will not process your application without that certification.3Wisconsin State Legislature. Wisconsin Code 440.26 – Private Security Permit You need a sponsoring agency lined up before you apply. If you later leave for a different agency, the new employer has five days to notify DSPS.
How to Apply
Three things need to come together: your personal application in LicensE, a sponsorship form from your agency, and fingerprints through Fieldprint. Start them in parallel.
Your Application in LicensE
Create an account at license.wi.gov, complete the application, and pay the fees online. The full packet is described in DSPS Form 2271.1Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services. Division of Professional Credential Processing Private Security Permit Application Information You will disclose any prior arrests, convictions, or pending charges, along with any professional licenses you hold in other states.
Agency Sponsorship on Form 3038
Your employer completes Form 3038, the Addendum to License Application for Security Professions. It carries the agency’s license number, business address, and a signed certification from an authorized representative that the agency will employ you and be responsible for your conduct.6Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services. Addendum to License Application for Security Professions The agency submits it directly to DSPS. A job offer letter is not a substitute.
Fingerprints Through Fieldprint
Schedule an appointment at FieldprintWisconsin.com using the code FPWISECURITY.4Department of Safety and Professional Services. Private Security Person Bring a photo ID and a secondary form of identification. Your prints feed the state and federal criminal background checks DSPS runs on every applicant. Fieldprint collects its own fee at the appointment, which covers the capture and the FBI and DOJ processing.

The Temporary Permit Option
Wisconsin lets you start working before the full background check is finished. If the initial Department of Justice records check comes back clean, DSPS can issue a temporary permit good for 30 days.1Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services. Division of Professional Credential Processing Private Security Permit Application Information You have to select this option in LicensE when you apply.
One hard limit: you cannot carry a firearm under a temporary permit, no exceptions.3Wisconsin State Legislature. Wisconsin Code 440.26 – Private Security Permit Once the full state and federal checks clear, DSPS converts the temporary to a regular permit.
Armed Security Requires a Separate Firearms Permit
A regular private security permit does not authorize you to carry a weapon on the job. Armed security work requires an additional firearms permit from DSPS.4Department of Safety and Professional Services. Private Security Person The federal Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act (LEOSA), which allows qualified law enforcement officers to carry concealed nationwide, does not cover private security guards.
Only holders of a regular permit can apply for the firearms credential, so anyone still on a 30-day temporary has to wait for the full permit before pursuing armed work.1Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services. Renewal
Wisconsin private security permits expire on August 31 of every even-numbered year, regardless of when yours was first issued. A permit granted in June of an even year still needs renewal by that same August 31.4Department of Safety and Professional Services. Private Security Person
Renewal requires the current fee listed on the DSPS Renewal Dates and Fees schedule, a signed disclosure covering any arrests, convictions, or pending charges since your last renewal, and a fresh criminal background check that DSPS runs each cycle. Allow 7 to 10 business days for the background check during the open renewal window. You also need to still be working for a licensed agency; the permit cannot be maintained outside active employment in the industry.4Department of Safety and Professional Services. Private Security Person Let it lapse five years or more, and the $25 late surcharge applies.
If Your Application Is Denied
DSPS keeps a file on every applicant that contains the information behind the approval or denial decision.3Wisconsin State Legislature. Wisconsin Code 440.26 – Private Security Permit If you are denied, you are entitled to know why. Misdemeanor-based denials are discretionary and worth challenging with context about the offense and your work history. An unpardoned felony conviction leaves no room to argue; the only route forward is a gubernatorial pardon through the Wisconsin Governor’s Pardon Advisory Board, which is a separate process on its own timeline.
