What To Have Ready When You Call

Whoever picks up will need to know exactly where the problem is. Have the route number, direction of travel, and nearest mile marker or cross street ready before you dial. A landmark works if you don’t have a mile marker. Then describe the hazard itself: a pothole’s rough size, whether debris blocks a lane, whether a guardrail is hanging into traffic. When To Call 911 Instead

None of these numbers are staffed as emergency lines. A downed tree across an interstate lane, a crash, or any hazard that needs an immediate response goes to 911 or the local State Police detachment, not to the district office or the hotline.

If a Pothole Damaged Your Vehicle

The Division of Highways does not pay damage claims itself.
