What a Violation Costs
Under K.S.A. 31-510, the Kansas state fire marshal can impose civil penalties of up to $1,000 per violation of the state fireworks act. If a violation continues after written notice, each day counts as a separate offense, so fines can stack.7Kansas Revisor of Statutes. K.S.A. 31-510 Any penalties the Unified Government imposes under its own ordinance apply on top of those.
Free Safety Buckets From KCKFD
Starting July 1, 2026, the Kansas City, Kansas Fire Department is handing out free buckets at any KCK fire station as part of a new “Bucket Brigade” program, one per family while supplies last. Fill the bucket with water and soak spent fireworks in it before throwing them out so they can’t reignite in the trash.6Unified Government of Wyandotte County/KCK. KCKFD Fireworks Safety Tips
Watch the City Line
Wyandotte County’s rules stop at its border. Many Johnson County cities to the south, including Overland Park, Olathe, Leawood, Lenexa, Prairie Village, Merriam, Mission, and Fairway, ban consumer fireworks entirely, with some allowing only novelty items like sparklers or snappers. Lawrence and Leavenworth also maintain full bans.2KMBC. Overland Park, for example, can issue fines of up to $500 under its local ordinance.8City of Overland Park.
