Wyoming Disabled Veteran Benefits: Tax, Plates, and Tuition

Wyoming disabled veteran benefits include a $6,000 property tax exemption, free Disabled Veteran license plates, free lifetime hunting and fishing licenses, a lifetime state parks pass, tuition waivers for family members, and a scoring preference for state jobs. Wyoming also levies no state income tax, so disability compensation and military retirement pay arrive untouched by state taxation. Each benefit has its own disability rating threshold and its own application office, and the rules are specific enough that it pays to read them one at a time.

Property Tax Exemption

Wyoming reduces the assessed value of a qualifying veteran’s property by $6,000 each year.1Justia. Wyoming Code 39-13-105 – Exemptions Because Wyoming taxes property at a fraction of market value, the dollars come off a smaller base, and the exemption can eliminate a real portion of the bill. It applies to your primary residence. If you don’t use it on real property in a given year, you can apply it to a vehicle’s licensing fee instead.2MyArmyBenefits. Wyoming Military and Veterans Benefits

You qualify with a compensable service-connected disability rating from the VA, an honorable discharge, and at least three years of Wyoming residency when you file.1Justia. Wyoming Code 39-13-105 – Exemptions The statute sets no minimum percentage. Any compensable rating is enough.

File a sworn claim with your county assessor between January 1 and the fourth Monday in May. Miss the window and you lose the exemption for that tax year.

A surviving spouse can keep the exemption during widowhood if the veteran would have qualified, both spouses were Wyoming residents at the time of the veteran’s death, and the spouse has kept three years of residency.1Justia. Wyoming Code 39-13-105 – Exemptions

If your mortgage escrows taxes, send a copy of the updated tax statement to your servicer after the exemption posts so your monthly payment can be recalculated.

No State Income Tax

Wyoming has no individual income tax, and that covers every source: VA disability compensation, military retirement pay, Thrift Savings Plan distributions, and civilian wages.2MyArmyBenefits. Wyoming Military and Veterans Benefits VA disability compensation is also excluded from federal taxable income.3MyArmyBenefits. Federal Taxes on Veterans Disability or Military Retirement Pensions Between the two, your disability payment reaches you without income tax at either level. For veterans moving in from a state that taxes income, this is often the largest financial benefit Wyoming offers.

Disabled Veteran License Plates

With a 50% or greater service-connected disability rating, you can apply for Wyoming’s Disabled Veteran plates. The first plate is free and exempt from registration fees, and it can go on a passenger car, pickup truck, motorcycle, or multipurpose vehicle.4Wyoming Department of Transportation. Disabled Veteran License Plates You may also buy one additional pair for a motorcycle or multipurpose vehicle at regular registration fees.

The vehicle has to be titled in your name or jointly with an immediate family member. Apply at your county treasurer’s office at least 30 days before your current registration expires, and renew annually at the same office.

One thing to know up front: the Disabled Veteran plate does not authorize parking in handicapped spaces. For that you need a separate handicapped parking placard, regardless of plate type.4Wyoming Department of Transportation. Disabled Veteran License Plates

Hunting, Fishing, and State Park Access

Outdoor recreation benefits work on two tiers, and the gap between them matters.

100% Disability Rating

A 100% VA disability rating (the rating itself, not the compensation rate) qualifies you for a free lifetime license covering game bird hunting, small game hunting, and fishing.2MyArmyBenefits. Wyoming Military and Veterans Benefits You need Wyoming residency and an honorable discharge. The Wyoming Game and Fish Department handles the application.5Wyoming Game and Fish Department. 50% to 99% Disability Rating

At 50% or higher with compensation, you qualify for a free lifetime fishing license covering all fish species you can legally take in Wyoming, subject to normal season and bag limits.6FindLaw. Wyoming Code 23-2-201 – Fees, Restrictions, Nonresident Application Fee You’ll need proof of residency, certification of your rating, and any further documentation the Game and Fish Commission requires.

Lifetime State Parks Pass

Separately, at 50% or greater you can get a free Lifetime Veteran’s Pass for Wyoming State Parks. It covers day-use and camping fees at every state park and historic site while you remain a Wyoming resident.7Wyoming State Parks. Lifetime Veteran Application

Tuition for Your Family

Wyo. Stat. ยง 19-14-106 covers tuition at the University of Wyoming and all Wyoming community colleges for overseas combat veterans, their surviving spouses, and their dependents.8Justia. Wyoming Code 19-14-106 – Free Tuition for Education of War Orphans and Veterans It also reaches surviving spouses and dependents of veterans whose death was service-connected or who died from injuries incurred during active service.

Worth noting before you apply: this program is tied to combat service and service-connected death, not to a disability percentage. Many disabled veterans qualify because the disability stems from combat, but a high rating alone is not the trigger.

Key eligibility details:

  • Dependents of combat veterans must be under 22 at enrollment.
  • Benefits run up to eight semesters within an eight-year period for a baccalaureate or associate degree.9Wyoming Community College Commission. Veteran Tuition Benefit
  • Students must keep at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA by the end of the spring semester that completes their third or fourth semester, and every spring semester after that.8Justia. Wyoming Code 19-14-106 – Free Tuition for Education of War Orphans and Veterans
  • Applicants must exhaust any federal VA educational assistance they’re eligible for before drawing on this state benefit.

Apply through the VA certifying official at the University of Wyoming or your Wyoming community college.

Preference for State Jobs

Wyoming gives veterans and surviving spouses a hiring preference in public-sector positions. When a state agency uses a numerical scoring system, a disabled veteran with a 10% or greater service-connected disability receives a 10% scoring advantage. Veterans without a compensable disability and surviving spouses receive 5%.2MyArmyBenefits. Wyoming Military and Veterans Benefits The preference applies across every public department in the state.10Justia. Wyoming Code 19-14-102 – Interview Preference in State Employment

At the federal level, Schedule A hiring authority allows agencies to hire people with disabilities noncompetitively, outside the standard application process.11U.S. Office of Personnel Management. Documents You’ll Need

Almost every application draws from the same stack of paperwork. Pulling it together once up front saves a lot of back-and-forth.

  • DD Form 214, your discharge certificate. Wyoming lets you record it with your county clerk at no cost, which creates a local backup.13Sweetwater County. State Benefits
  • A VA letter certifying your service-connected disability rating and compensation, available through eBenefits or VA.gov.
  • Proof of Wyoming residency, such as a utility bill, lease, or state-issued ID. The property tax exemption specifically requires three years of residency at the time you file.

Where to Apply

There is no single application. Each benefit routes to its own office:

Wyoming’s Veteran Service Officers are stationed across the state and help with both state and federal applications at no cost.14Wyoming Military Department.
