YES-NM Stimulus Check Status: Use TAP to Track Your Rebate

To check the status of your New Mexico stimulus check, use the state’s Taxpayer Access Point at tap.state.nm.us, not YES-NM. The YES-NM site many people land on while searching for stimulus check status is New Mexico’s portal for health and human services benefits like Medicaid and food assistance, not tax rebates. The rebate tracking tool lives on the Taxation and Revenue Department’s site under “Where’s My Refund?”

Why YES-NM Is the Wrong Site

YES.NM.GOV describes itself as a one-stop shop for finding, applying for, and managing benefits programs run through the Human Services Department. It has no connection to the 2021-based income tax rebates the state issued in 2022 and 2023. Entering your Social Security Number and tax details there will not return a rebate status, and it puts personal data on a system that was never going to have your answer.

The right place is the Taxpayer Access Point run by the Taxation and Revenue Department. Its “Where’s My Refund?” feature handles both regular refund inquiries and rebate status checks.1New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department. 2022 Personal Income Tax Form Packet

How to Check Your Status on TAP

Before you log in, pull your 2021 New Mexico Form PIT-1. You need two things:

  • Your Social Security Number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number
  • Your exact refund amount from your 2021 PIT-1, down to the cent

The refund figure must match what the state has on file exactly. Rounding or estimating will cause the system to reject your inquiry.1New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department. 2022 Personal Income Tax Form Packet On the TAP landing page, find “Where’s My Refund?” under the Personal Income section. Enter your ID type, your number, and the refund amount, then submit. The system returns whether a payment was issued and how it was sent. Make sure cookies are enabled in your browser; the portal will not run without them.

A quick orientation on what you are checking for: the state authorized two rounds of rebates tied to 2021 returns. Both rounds paid $500 to single filers and $1,000 to joint filers, heads of household, and surviving spouses. Payments went out automatically to eligible filers.2Office of the Governor of New Mexico. What to Do If Your Rebate Never Arrived

If TAP shows your rebate was issued but no check or deposit reached you, the department treats a check as lost once 30 days have passed since the issuance date. Email trd.taxreturnhelp@tax.nm.gov and ask staff to research the status.4New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department. Refunds They will verify your current mailing address and look into whether the check came back to the department or was cashed by someone else.

When a check is confirmed lost, the department may issue an Affidavit for Duplicate State Warrant. Complete the affidavit, get it notarized, and mail it back. Once the department has it, the replacement process runs 8 to 12 weeks because the credit has to be restored to your account and a new paper check generated.4New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department. Refunds Skipping notarization or submitting an incomplete form only adds weeks.

If TAP shows no rebate was ever processed despite a timely filing, the problem is usually a data mismatch on your return or an eligibility question. Call 1-866-285-2996 to identify what went wrong.3New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department. Contact Information

If You Never Filed a 2021 Return

The deadline to file a 2021 New Mexico return and still qualify for these rebates was May 31, 2024.2Office of the Governor of New Mexico. Will You Owe Federal Tax on It?

Most recipients will not. The IRS addressed state payments like these in Notice 2023-56. If you took the standard deduction on the federal return for the year the underlying state taxes were paid, the rebate is not taxable. If you itemized and your state income tax deduction actually lowered your federal bill, the tax benefit rule may require you to include part of the rebate in federal income the following year. Many itemizers hit the $10,000 cap on state and local tax deductions, and in that case the rebate is not taxable either.5Internal Revenue Service.
