A Yuba County CCW permit is issued by the Yuba County Sheriff’s Office to qualified residents who complete an online application, a mandatory training course, a fingerprint-based background check, and an in-person interview. The permit is valid for two years from the date of issuance.1Yuba County Sheriff’s Office. Who Qualifies
You must be at least 21 years old and either live in Yuba County or have your principal place of work there. Your California DMV address must already be updated to a Yuba County address before the sheriff’s office will process your application.2California Legislative Information. Residency proof takes more than a driver’s license. Acceptable evidence includes voter registration at a Yuba County address, a homeowner’s property tax exemption filing, utility bills, a signed lease, or a mortgage statement.1Yuba County Sheriff’s Office. You also cannot be anyone prohibited from possessing firearms under state or federal law. Common disqualifiers under 18 U.S.C. ยง 922(g) include a prior felony conviction, a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence, certain domestic violence restraining orders, involuntary commitment to a mental institution, and unlawful use of a controlled substance. California adds its own list, including convictions for certain violent or firearms-related misdemeanors within the past ten years.
Beyond those bright-line rules, the Yuba County Sheriff’s Office evaluates “good moral character.” That review looks at your criminal history, any documented behavior suggesting a risk to yourself or others, and your overall record with law enforcement. It gives the sheriff grounds to deny an application when the record raises genuine safety concerns.
Training You Have to Complete
First-time applicants must complete a 16-hour training course before the permit will be issued. Renewal applicants complete an 8-hour refresher.3Orange County California – Sheriff’s Department. Required Training and Inspections Both must include at least one hour on mental health awareness and resources, a requirement added by Senate Bill 2 in 2024. The instructor or facility has to be specifically authorized by the Yuba County Sheriff, so confirm your provider is on the approved list before signing up.
The course combines classroom instruction on California firearms law with supervised range time. You must pass a live-fire qualification for every firearm you want listed on your permit, which means bringing each handgun and demonstrating safe, accurate operation.3Orange County California – Sheriff’s Department. Required Training and Inspections Carrying more than one firearm means extra range time and ammunition. Training fees for the initial 16-hour course typically run between $100 and $260.
Filing the Application
Yuba County handles intake through the Permitium online portal at yubaca.permitium.com.4Yuba County Sheriff-Coroner. Upload digital copies of your driver’s license, residency documents, and training certificate directly through the portal. Missing or mismatched paperwork can bounce the application back before an investigator sees it.
Fees
The California Department of Justice charges a $93 Live Scan fingerprinting fee, which the applicant pays.4Yuba County Sheriff-Coroner. Expect total out-of-pocket costs in the range of a few hundred dollars once training is included. Call the Yuba County Sheriff’s Office at (530) 749-7777 for the current fee schedule.
The Interview and Background Check
After submission and payment, the sheriff’s office schedules a mandatory in-person interview. An investigator reviews your application with you and asks about your background, your reasons for wanting the permit, and anything that needs clarification. Being thorough and honest on the portal matters here, because inconsistencies between what you wrote and what you say create problems.

Fingerprint Background Checks The investigation also screens for mental health holds, active restraining orders, and other disqualifying records. This is usually the longest part of the process and can take several weeks.
Approval, Duration, and Renewal
Once the background investigation is complete, you receive formal notice of approval or denial. If approved, the sheriff’s office schedules a final appointment to sign for and pick up the physical CCW card and review its terms.
The permit is valid for two years. To renew, complete the 8-hour refresher course and submit a renewal application through the Permitium portal before your permit expires. Starting January 1, 2028, issuing agencies cannot accept a renewal filed more than 90 days after expiration. Miss that window and you start over with the full initial application, including the 16-hour course. Put your expiration date on your calendar and begin renewal early.
Keeping the Permit in Good Standing
Update your permit with the sheriff’s office promptly if you move. Your DMV address must match the address on your CCW, so update both.1Yuba County Sheriff’s Office. Yuba County Sheriff’s Office Online Concealed Weapon Permit Application A Yuba County permit does not transfer if you move out of the county; you would need to apply with the sheriff or police chief in the new jurisdiction.
Report any change in your legal status that could affect eligibility, such as a new criminal charge, a restraining order, or a mental health hold. Nondisclosure does not keep the permit valid; it adds a potential charge on top of whatever triggered the disqualification.
Where You Still Cannot Carry
A valid CCW does not authorize carry everywhere. Senate Bill 2, effective in 2024, expanded the list of “sensitive places” where concealed carry is prohibited. Following a September 2024 Ninth Circuit ruling, these restrictions are currently in effect for locations including:
- Bars and restaurants that serve alcohol
- Playgrounds and public parks, including state parks
- Casinos
- Stadiums and arenas
- Libraries
- Zoos and museums
- Parking areas connected to any of the locations above
The list continues to shift as courts work through legal challenges. A provision that would have banned carry in privately owned businesses open to the public, unless the business posted a welcoming sign, remains blocked by a federal court injunction as of early 2025.7California Department of Justice. Getting this wrong can mean criminal charges even with a valid permit.
If Your Application Is Denied
If the sheriff’s office denies your application because it determined you are a “disqualified person,” you have a right to challenge the decision. The licensing authority must give you written notice stating the reason along with a form to request a hearing.8California Legislative Information. California Penal Code 26206
You generally have 30 days from receiving the denial to request a hearing in Yuba County Superior Court. The sheriff’s office may require a local administrative appeal first; if so, the office has 60 days to resolve it, and if that appeal fails, you have another 30 days to take the matter to superior court.8California Legislative Information. California Penal Code 26206
At the court hearing, the burden is on the state. The district attorney must prove by a preponderance of the evidence that you are a disqualified person. The court must schedule the hearing within 60 days of receiving your request, and the Department of Justice has 14 days to file your criminal history report with the court. If the denial was based on inaccurate records or a misidentification, the hearing is your formal mechanism to correct it.
Carrying Out of State
California does not have formal reciprocity agreements with other states, so a Yuba County CCW does not automatically allow concealed carry in most other jurisdictions. A handful of states may honor California permits independently, but the list is short and changes. Verify the current law in every state you plan to pass through before traveling with a concealed firearm. Carrying on an invalid permit in another state can bring serious criminal charges regardless of your California standing.
